At the Dawn of Revolution

A Little Hatred by Joe Abercrombie

January 3, 2024 by Jake Leave a Comment

I’m a mood reader most of the time. If I’m into mystery, it can only be mystery. History, same. True crime, yep. When I’m reading other stuff, I’m always envious. I rarely feel like I’m reading what I want. Rarely am I in the mood for fantasy. I do get there sometimes but not often. Part of that is the paucity of fantasy titles that hold my interest. I love A Song of Ice and Fire but can’t do Lord of the Rings and not much else has caught […]

Say one thing for Joe Abercrombie, he knows grimdark

A Little Hatred (The Age of Madness #1) by Joe Abercrombie

December 28, 2019 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

I am a HUGE fan of Joe Abercrombie’s First Law series which began with an original trilogy but has sprouted three additional stand alone novels and a collection of short stories. This is the first book in a new trilogy called the Age of Madness. It’s been a few years since Abercrombie visited the First Law series but that is because he spent several years writing all three books of this series at once. He wanted to be better with his continuity and ensure that […]

Gritty fantasy western, with some surprises along the way.

I don’t really like reading Westerns. I don’t really like reading action stories. I don’t really seek out violent stories. And the last time Joe Abercrombie had a female protagonist (Best Served Cold) I was ambivalent about her, and that book in general. Red Country features all of those things, so I was a bit wary about it, to say the least. I probably wouldn’t have picked it up for a while yet, but I’d had such a fun time reading Half a King and The Heroes […]

For glory. For victory. For staying alive.

I may have waited too long to write this review. I read The Heroes over a month ago, as part of my Joe Abercrombie week-long reading frenzy, which started after I read his latest book, the excellent Half a King. I’ve actually owned a copy of this since the day it was released, but for some reason I’d never gotten around to reading it. The Heroes is one of three (so far) standalone fantasy books set in Abercrombie’s First Law universe, all of which are […]
