Saga is always an emotional trip, where even the highs are touched by a rather unsettling nervous feeling. And really, only after reading the gut punch that was Volume 7, would anyone read #8 and think, “Oh, that one was actually pretty uplifting!” Volume 7 takes place on a comet that is caught in the middle of the war between Wreath and Landfall. Hazel’s collected family have settled there for some months, finding it to be a surprisingly hospitable place in the midst of the […]
So how do the robots eat or drink anyway? HOW DO THEY KISS WITH NO MOUTHS.
It says something about this series that this heart-wrenching volume of storytelling is a relief after the last one. Oy, that last one was rough. But this was one was more bittersweet than bitter. Something that I have always appreciated about this series is its tone. Like real life, everything isn’t all bad or all good all the time. Real life is messy, and you can feel many things at once. Real life has hills and valleys, and flat plains. One of the reasons I […]
Getting on the Saga Bandwagon
I’ve seen friends and others rave about the amazingness of the Saga series for some time now. After finally getting around to reading volume 1, I can now say I get it, I finally understand what the fuss is about. The world of the story is interesting and makes you want to know and understand more of the history and various races and planets involved, the characters are unique and engaging, and the different plot threads being set up all each intriguing but clearly somehow […]
Surprise Saga!
4.5 stars Every new volume of Saga that comes out is a little event in my life, and it feels like the wait between each one is interminable. Since we’d already had one volume out in 2017, Saga, Vol. 7, I was not expecting another one, certainly not just before New Year’s. Going back and checking, the last volume came out in April. I knew it had to be fairly early in the year, as I was heartbroken enough by the end of that volume, I’m not sure […]
You can only get soul-crushed so many times a year.
I love my local library. Not only do they carry each Volume of Saga, but they got this copy to me before its official publication date!!!!! This means that I have now read two volumes of Saga in 2017, but the problem is that I have already finished the latest volume of Saga and have to wait who knows how many months for the next one. This is a problem, because Brian K. Vaughan has introduced a MAJOR cliffhanger that bodes a change. A big […]
Ready for Jolabokaflod!
Earlier this year, when someone posted an article on Facebook about the Icelandic tradition of Jolabokaflod (Yule book flood), my mom, sister, and I were like, “We’re so doing this.” What’s not to like about hunkering down on Christmas Eve, drinking cocoa, giving each other books, and then spending the evening reading. Thanks to Caitlin, I now have both the books and a mug to start this tradition. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
