Egyptology, a Met Gala and an Art Heist

The Stolen Queen by Fiona Davis

March 23, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I’m not sure if it’s me or the author, but while I have enjoyed the last few Fiona Davis novels I have read, I also don’t think they have been as good as some of her earlier books. I think part of it might be that the two I enjoyed the most had more time between the two view points of the dual narratives so there was a bit more of the modern person discovering the story of the past while these last ones I […]

Dance with a side of criminal profiling

The Spectacular by Fiona Davis

January 7, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Fiona Davis can always be relied upon to create a good story focused on historically inspired events and buildings set in New York. This one was a little bit different since both of the time lines focused on the same person, Marion Brooks, just about 36 years apart. Most of the other novels of hers I have read have had a larger gap in time and the person in the more recent time line is trying to figure out the mystery while the reader knows […]

A Point in Time Series Review

Naomi's Gift by Martha Hall Kelly

Ash Wednesday by Paula McLain

Landing by Olivia Hawker

We are Bone and Earth by Esi Edugyan

A Wild Rose by Fiona Davis

Alison's Conviction by Thomas Keneally

Mother Swamp by Jesmyn Ward

Per usual, here are my reviews for each short story in the collection. Overall, this collection at times moved me and made me do more research on certain events brought up which is why my reading this week was slow (for me). Naomi’s Gift by Martha Hall Kelly (5 stars)-Phenomenal. You can figure out where Kelly is taking you, but I honestly was shocked at the the whole Holocaust camp for women/mothers/children. I keep thinking that there is nothing that could shock me at that […]

Theater During the Red Scare

The Chelsea Girls by Fiona Davis

November 30, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I think it was either jomidi’s review of this novel specifically or Caitlin D’s more general review of Fiona Davis’s novels but I ended up downloading The Chelsea Girls a while back.  By the time I started reading it, I didn’t quite remember what the overall story line was beyond being set in New York during the mid-20th century and involving female friendships.  I was very pleasantly surprised when I realized this wasn’t simply a story about young women navigating life in a big city […]

Fiona Davis Reviews

The Dollhouse by Fiona Davis

The Address by Fiona Davis

The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis

September 15, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Fiona Davis employs a similar writing style to early Jojo Moyes novels: two interconnected stories with strong female protagonists told decades apart. Unlike Moyes Davis also weaves in real historical landmarks, fictionalized versions of real people as well as characters who are based on real people. The Dollhouse The Dollhouse is the story of recently dumped journalist, Rose Lewin in the present day investigating the past lives of the women who lived in the famed Barbizon Hotel. Rose becomes instantly drawn into the story of Darby […]

Fiona Davis does it again

The Chelsea Girls by Fiona Davis

August 3, 2019 by jomidi Leave a Comment

Fiona Davis is fast becoming my favorite author.  I have enjoyed all her past historical fictions – The Dollhouse, The Address, and The Masterpiece, but this one is the best yet.  All of her books center on a historical location in New York City. This one, unlike her others and many historical fictions written today, does not switch back and forth between two time periods.  It starts during WWII with quiet Hazel, the child of a “Broadway family,” including a very demanding stage mom, joining […]
