Crazy like Heaven

March 24, 2015 by sistercoyote Leave a Comment

Since I was a bit disappointed with the last couple of books I read (one quite a bit more than the other), I thought it was time to go Crazy for a while. Good old Crazy. I love Crazy. I know I shouldn’t. It’s a small, backwater, two-stoplight one-horse kind of town. (Kindle Edition, Location 42)

A Disaster at the end of this Book

March 24, 2015 by sistercoyote Leave a Comment

I picked up this novella as part of a Humble Bundle sale, because there were other books I was more interested in reading. But it’s short (99 pages) and I figured since I just finished reading something a little bit on the heavier side I could use a little light reading. Alas. This was not the book I hoped it would be.

Fun story. But fire the editor, please.

Eiji Miyaki is a young man in search of his father.  In a modern, Japanese, coming-of-age tale, he doesn’t meet his father but if his goal in meeting him was to learn something about himself, well that happens in spades.  Eiji’s father is fiercely protective of his paternity and keeps a watchdog lawyer and assorted Yakuza goons to keep Eiji from meeting him.  The story meanders through derailments on Eiji’s journey.  When Eiji hits a roadblock, or is planning a next step, he frequently diverts into […]

Bee-lieve Me, This Buzzed About Book Is Bee-autiful

March 19, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

I love this book so much that I don’t know if I’ll be able to talk about it without breaking down into the incoherent fangirl I am in my heart of hearts. I’m going to try though because this was one of the most unique books I’ve read in years. One to put on my shelf of favorites, push into the hands of friends (or strangers), and revisit for yearly rereads. But don’t take my word for it, take Margaret Atwood’s, who called it a […]

High Quality Fluff

March 18, 2015 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I needed a fun and fluffy palate cleanser so I decided to pick up these young adult novels by the women behind the Go Fug Yourself blog. They were just what I needed—a few hours of enjoyable escapism. In Spoiled, sixteen-year-old Molly Dix finds out right before her mother dies that she’s the daughter of famous actor Brick Berlin. In an attempt to connect with her movie star dad and spoiled half-sister, Brooke Berlin, she leaves Indiana for Beverly Hills. Things don’t go as smoothly […]

It Is What It Is

March 18, 2015 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

This novel is short and told in what I might call an impressionist manner, its form occasionally reminiscent of entries that you could find in Twitter or FaceBook updates. And yet in the end, it is a very rich story of a marriage and motherhood, with poetry, philosophy and some wry commentary on both institutions along the way. The narrator, who refers to herself as “the wife,” takes us through the highlights and lowlights of her adult life: dating, yoga, work, colic, bedbugs, infidelity, and […]
