Cliche, Mok, or Another Book I Just Couldn’t Finish…

I’m not going to pull any punches on this one: I hated this book.

One of those dystopian futures that really could happen.

September 13, 2015 by Mrs Smith Reads Leave a Comment

If I had read this book three years ago, I would have wept my way through to the end. Since things have improved a bit for my family since then, I was able to read The Subprimes with a much clearer eye toward the outer extremes of wealth inequality which Carl Taro Greenfield imagines for the United States of the future. Greenfield does manage to put a humorous spin on a rage-inducing topic, and for that, he deserves kudos. While I have no doubt […]

Foist This Upon Your Teenagers

September 12, 2015 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I think this book is on verge of getting over-hyped by the book community, so even though I really enjoyed it, I don’t want people to go into it thinking it’s going to be the best young adult novel they’re ever going to read. There’s a lot to recommend Everything, Everything though. Nicola Yoon’s first novel brims with easygoing, pleasant prose and well-written characters. For a short book, she really brought the characters to life. That’s probably partly because she has such a talent for […]

Has everyone been reading Nalo Hopkinson without me?

September 11, 2015 by ElCicco 1 Comment

Sometimes, when one is introduced to a gifted writer who has been crafting fine works for going on two decades, one feels both excited to have found such a trove and yet irritated to have not known about her sooner. This is how I feel after reading Nalo Hopkinson’s first novel Brown Girl in the Ring, published in 1998. The novel won several awards and was nominated for a Philip K. Dick Award. It is an absolutely fascinating combination of dystopian future, Caribbean folk tale, […]

A Book About a Jokey Robot

September 8, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 13 Comments

Well, I might as well get this over with. It’s intimidating panning a book everyone and their mother seems to love. Please don’t come at me with pitchforks. I will say this in The Martian’s defense, it has a stunning cover design and a really, really good premise. A clever botanist/engineer accidentally gets deserted on Mars and has to Macgyver his way to survival until someone can come back for him? Genius. If it sounds interesting to you at all, you should give it a […]

A sadly disappointing mystery by an author I really like.

September 8, 2015 by Mrs Smith Reads Leave a Comment

I’ve just realized that I really need to keep up with my reviews, as I opened this draft and had to think long and hard about the book to remember what it was about. That might actually be my review, right there. Mrs Smith’s actual review of The Skeleton Road by Val McDermid
