The Saga series takes place in a world where two factions are fighting each other in a never-ending galactic war. Though the fight started on a world and its moon, the conflict has spread to many other worlds and drawn in other species all over the galaxy. When two soldiers from opposite sides fall in love, desert their respective armies, and have a baby, both sides try to kill the parents and kidnap the baby. Marko and Alana make some narrow escapes and try desperately […]

Hey look, it’s a title with the word “girl” in it that’s actually about a girl, not a woman

I’m a bit of a chicken when it comes to horror, but so many cannonballers loved The Girl With All the Gifts that I thought I should give it a try. And I’m so glad I did! What a beautifully inventive story that kept me turning pages. There were some tense parts, but nothing strong or gory enough to give me nightmares. However, this is maybe not the kind of book you want to read on your lunch hour unless you have a strong stomach. […]

A Quick Must Read

September 21, 2015 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

Definitely the cutest book I’ve read this year. I had a smile on my face throughout the entirety of it. Run, don’t walk, to your local library or bookstore to read it. I really think it’d be enjoyable to graphic novel newbies as well as readers more versed in the genre. Nimona joins up as the sidekick to Lord Ballister Blackheart, a villain with a vendetta against the kingdom’s current hero, Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin. Nimona is a complete joy to watch as she shapeshifts her […]

Religious nutballs, an awkward teenager, and a creepy ice cream truck driver make terrible decisions

This was the weirdest fucking book. I… kind of liked it? I was originally drawn to it because it takes place in Arco, Idaho and I have family who live there, so I thought it’d be interesting to read a story set in their little town of 910 people. Except The Girl Who Slept With God takes place in some alternate universe Arco where there are enough people to have two high schools and a University. I don’t even know. I realize this is not […]

The Truth Will Set You Free

September 20, 2015 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

The only thing at once more precious and more fragile than a true story is a free life. A Pulitzer finalist and long-listed for the Man Booker Prizer, The Moor’s Account is a work of fiction based on real historical events and people. Through the eyes of our narrator Mustafa, aka Estebanico, a Muslim from Morocco, the reader experiences the life of a successful merchant in Portuguese controlled North Africa, enslavement, and an ill-fated Spanish quest for gold in La Florida. Lalami’s inspiration came from […]

Just Read This Book Already

September 20, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

I literally read this book 6 months ago, but kept putting off writing the review because there’s no way anything I can say will do any justice to Kindred. Seriously, Octavia Butler is working on a completely different level than most authors. If I were a teacher, I’d be pushing this on my students like crazy. Dana, a black woman, and Kevin, a white man, are a married couple living in the 1970s. They’re both very modern, educated people. On Dana’s 26th birthday, she is […]
