Creepily Delicious

October 29, 2015 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

4.5 stars. I inhaled this slim David Mitchell novel in just a few hours yesterday. I was so pleased by Cloud Atlas earlier this year that I nearly jumped for joy when I heard he was putting out a haunted house story just in time for Halloween. I hardly ever dabble in the horror genre, but I’m glad I made an exception. While this book was definitely creepy, it wasn’t overly scary. It propelled me to keep reading and find out what happened next, but […]

Mind the Gap

October 28, 2015 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I was seriously afraid that I’d be wasting my time on yet another damsel in distress story where the awkward boy gets to find himself and be the hero, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that Bone Gap played with all those expectations and tropes in an unexpected way. This was shortlisted for the National Book Award, so I was hoping it’d be good. It was! Bone Gap is a strange town with some serious secrets. Finn and Sean are two young men/boys just […]

“I shouldn’t mind being a bride at a wedding if I could be one without having a husband.”

October 26, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

I had no idea what this story was about when a friend dragged me to see the new adaptation of Far From the Madding Crowd with Carey Mulligan. Thank god she did because I looooooooooved it. To the point where I was almost afraid to read the book. What if it didn’t live up to the movie? FFtMC tells the story of Bathsheba Everdene, a headstrong woman who ends up inheriting and running a Weatherbury farm in Victorian era England. She is very young at […]

Admired But Unloved

October 26, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 3 Comments

I think I’m going to have to file this one away on the “admired but unloved” shelf. It was definitely an interesting read because whether you like Fates And Furies or not, you can’t deny that Groff is a great writer doing some innovative things with structure. She was clearly very influenced by the theatre, especially old school tragedy. I think for this story to truly resonate, you need to have been married. It just didn’t hit me emotionally, but I think it might have […]

A cozy romance with some history thrown in

October 25, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 3 Comments

This one didn’t leave much of a lasting impression, but it was a perfect read for the mood I was in. The main character Nicola lives in present day Great Britain working in a gallery, but she has a secret. When she touches objects, she can sometimes see the history of its previous owners. When a woman comes into the shop claiming to possess a wood carving given to her ancestor by Catherine the Great, Nicola gets a short glimpse of Anna, the woman’s ancestor. […]

Great premise, poor follow through

October 25, 2015 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I adore a well spun revenge tale. The premise for Endangered promised such a story, but unfortunately the follow through was… lacking. Lauren “Panda” Daniels goes to a normal high school with the usual social divisions: the bullies, the kids keeping their heads down, the popular kids, the freaks, etc. Panda is one of the students keeping their heads down during the day, but on her off time she likes to get revenge on the bullies and unprincipled by photoblogging their misdeeds. Knock down one […]
