For Slightly Older Kids (or Adults Who Like Fun)

December 14, 2015 by NTE 2 Comments

If you’re looking for a book-gift for kids who consider themselves to be too old for picture books (Gasp!), then I’ve got a few recommendations for you: Do you like awesome things? And YouTube? Then you probably know Kid President: Kid President’s Guide to Being Awesome. Kid President is the onscreen name of an amazing kid who has a hilarious & lovely YouTube account.  Robby Novak (Kid President) and Brad Montague (his co-writer and brother-in-law) are the kind of writers/actors that talk in sentences that […]

The Victim’s Name Was Musa

December 12, 2015 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

My brother’s name was Musa. He had a name. But he’ll remain ‘the Arab’ forever. Albert Camus’ The Stranger, published in 1942, is a literary classic about one man’s existential crisis. The action of the novel takes place in Algeria under French colonial rule and the narrator, Meursault, is a Frenchman who has murdered an Arab. In The Meursault Investigation, Algerian journalist Kamel Daoud imagines the same story as told by the victim’s brother. The result is a powerful and insightful tale of the destructive […]

This wonderful romance is currently FREE

December 10, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 5 Comments

So many cannonballers have raved about this romance series that I had to see what all the fuss was about. So glad I gave it a chance! I’m picky about romance, especially contemporary novels, but Bowen is a thoughtful writer who quickly drew me into the relationship between Corey and Adam. It’s Corey’s first year at Harkness College (basically a stand-in for Yale or Harvard) and she’s still dealing with a hockey accident that left her paralyzed less than a year ago. She was supposed […]

What’s Behind Your Mask/Cannonball!

December 4, 2015 by ElCicco 9 Comments

Eileen is the debut novel of writer Ottessa Moshfegh, whose short stories have been featured in Paris Review and have won prestigious prizes. The action is set during the week leading up to Christmas in 1964, but this is far from a heartwarming holiday tale. It is dark, twisted and suspenseful. Readers who enjoyed The Dinner or The Care of Wooden Floors or Gone Girl will be delighted. We have a narrator who is seems honest, but what kind of person is she really? Eileen, […]

An Austen retelling that’s actually good

November 23, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

Scootsa1000 put this book in the same category as Clueless and Bridget Jones in her recent review of Jane (a retelling of Jane Eyre) and I immediately checked to see if my library had it. Because a good dystopian retelling of Jane Austen’s Persuasion? So here for that. Luckily my library had it in stock and I was able to immediately dive right in. The world Elliot North and Malakai Wentforth live in is recovering from something they call the reduction. Basically genetic engineering and […]

A long time ago this show was so good

November 23, 2015 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

I loved Veronica Mars the television show so much, but I must confess, I haven’t seen the movie. I had a baby that January, and my March just went by in a blur of no sleep. Now that I’ve read the books I should really go back and watch it. I did spoil myself with some major plot points from the movie since the first book takes place right after the movie. I liked the mystery plot in the book, and I thought it was […]
