Note: Depression has been effecting me more strongly this month and has probably colored my review of this book. Fantasy is my genre of choice and for most of my life I’ve wanted to be a paleontologist so when I received “The Dinosaur Lords” for Christmas I assumed I wouldn’t be able to put the book down, sadly that was not the case. In fact it was hard for me to get going in the first place. The book starts with a page informing you […]
Against All Odds
Still Missing chronicles Annie’s horrific abduction and imprisonment by a lunatic she calls The Freak, as told to her “shrink”. Each chapter represents a therapy session, as Annie understandably needs a great deal of help processing her ordeal. It’s clear from the very beginning that Annie’s case has generated 24-hour news cycle notoriety, though the circumstances of her homecoming are only given to us in pieces during her sessions. How did Annie get away? Is the cops’ investigation ongoing? Can Annie’s relationship with her boyfriend […]
I Say Ya Kill Your Heroes and Fly
“Kill your darlings” never felt this personal. Though published decades after the perfect To Kill A Mockingbird, this novel was written first. I think it’s important to keep reminding yourself of that fact if you start to feel that Lee has *changed Atticus*. Watchman finds the adult Jean Louise, our beloved Scout, coming back to Maycomb County from the big city, and becoming disillusioned with the politics and bigotry of her hometown. She comes to question her relationship with her father, Atticus. In many ways, […]
Rubin’s Vase
I normally have my review half-written in my head before I start writing it, but I just don’t even know what to say about this book. Let’s start with a necessary disclaimer: I picked this up as a married woman with one daughter, recently off an “I can’t have any more kids” health crisis (in my case it wound up resolved, but I felt the feels), and I had recently taken in a homeless woman with a baby and it was causing a lot of […]
Hello, Listeners
Hello, dear listeners fellow readers (even though we know the City Council has declared books to be Dangerous whether they are working or not) and Welcome to Night Vale.
Go Ask Malice
This book needs a trigger warning (if you’re into that sort of thing.) It’s rare that a “dark” spin on the Alice mythos actually lives up to that (shallow) attribution. This one’s filled with so much violence (sexual violence, regular violence, torture) that even the decapitation-happy Queen of Hearts would be like “Damn, girl, you went there?” It’s a pretty good book, but it’s important to know what you’re getting into. See above re: violence, but also know that it’s almost entirely violence against women. […]
