Disclosure: I was given this novel by the author through a CBR8 giveaway in exchange for a fair review. I received the book Friday, March 18, read half of it on the 19th, and the other half today, the 22nd. Life interfered on Sunday and Monday and I couldn’t sit down to read it, but I did spend a lot of time thinking about it. I don’t really like using terms like “page-turner” because they’re cliche, but this one … this one really did fly […]
More terrifying than reanimated dead people
Well, that was upsetting. I can’t remember the last Oates book I read, but this was a wonderful (and horrifying) way to jump back in. I really don’t want to meet anyone like Q__ P__, ever. We join him mid-narrative, following him just under a year after he is given probation by a judge for pleading guilty to “sexual misdemeanor committed against a minor,” (Q__ P__: “What happened with the black boy was Q__ P__’ s first offense, & a suspended sentence followed no actual […]
The game is afoot
3.5 stars. A Study in Charlotte is a pretty genius take on the Sherlock Holmes stories. It’s a modern-day retelling which we’ve seen before, but Cavallaro sets her characters in high school and makes them descendants of the real life Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Making them descendants is such a smart move because Jamie and Charlotte can share traits with their predecessors, but they aren’t glued to them. They can have their own adventures and personalities. Also, three cheers for a female Sherlock. She’s […]
Magic, swords, dragons and intrigue: using every word ever written.
It took me nine months to get through all 47.5 hours of the audiobook. You can produce a child in that amount of time. The majority of my friends have read the Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, whatever) books and we gather on a Monday evening to watch the new episodes (also a food-from-the-series feast at the end of each season, phenomenal). Speaking during an episode is strictly verboten, so I started reading the books to fill in the gaps in my […]
Going to have to rate this book with Begonia, Crab-apple blossom, and Saffron
2.5 stars. I’m trying to figure out if this book really did have serious flaws or if it was just wasn’t a fit for me and my tastes. It’s very possible that it’s a mixture of both. Obviously I made it through to the end and it wasn’t a hate read so it wasn’t a terrible book, but I found it to be an incredibly frustrating read. The beginning was almost magical in the way it drew me in. By two-thirds of the way through […]
Time Travel With Heart (and Heartbreak)
I’ve read this book before (maybe twice before) but it had been so long that I felt it was due for a re-read and review. Obviously, I’m a fan. Connie Willis can be a bit verbose and repetitive here and there, but I eat it all up anyway. (I also love J.R.R. Tolkien, Stephen King, T.H. White, and George R.R. Martin, so I can deal with a bit of verbosity and lengthy description). The story starts at Oxford University in the year 2054 in a […]
