4.5 stars. I’m a little mad that I got sucked into a book with a cliffhanger ending and who knows when the next book will be out, but at least it was an incredibly fun reading experience. I’ve got to try Schwab’s other books. If they’re as readable as this series, I know I’ll love them. Anyway, back to A Gathering of Shadows. The story starts off about 4 months after the end of A Darker Shade of Magic. Lila’s been out adventuring, meeting great […]
A Strong Finish
How do you solve a problem like having to write a review about the last book in a great YA series? It feels impossible. Thank god I wasn’t doing Cannonball Read when the 7th Harry Potter book came out. My review would have just been a string of “I don’t knows” and “oh my gods” and “I can’t evens.” I don’t want to summarize the book because spoilers, so maybe I’ll just talk around the plot. Stiefvater took on the Herculean task of wrapping up […]
Great title, pretty good book
I only occasionally dabble in romance so this is my first Sarah MacLean. It was a pretty great choice for a first book and I’d definitely recommend it if you like historical romance. The premise is A++ for sure. Lady Philippa Marbury is the second to youngest daughter of an esteemed family. To put it bluntly, she’s kind of a weirdo (at least for the time period). Basically, think of the main character from Bones set in regency England and you have Pippa. She’s all […]
Hold on to your pants! Zero World is a thrilling ride
Zero World by Jason M. Hough was a recommended pick by my favorite Independent Bookstore. My husband read it and said I would love it. Then geek goddess Felicia Day couldn’t praise it highly enough and I finally decided to give it a go. Once started, I couldn’t put it down. This book lives up to the buzz it has generated. In a not to distant future when relatively near space travel has become routine, Archon corporation has developed technology to create the perfect assassin. […]
Man, I hope it’s not aliens
I grabbed this audiobook on the way to the checkout counter at my library, and I’m glad I did. It made much more sense than the last audiobook I listened to, so it was a nice change. Plus, it was read by Del Roy, so it was like grandpa was telling me a story! This book has been making the rounds and has some notoriety in the children’s book world, despite being very long for a children’s book (over 400 pages!) We first meet […]
Unfinished Symphony
This novel was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize and praised by one of my favorite authors, Geraldine Brooks. It is a piece of dystopian fiction imagining an England where music is used to control a population that can no longer read and where memories have disappeared. All anyone needs to know is imparted through the carillon chimes each day. While the conceit is exceedingly clever, and the story often engaging, I found myself ultimately disappointed. This is a case where the reader can’t see […]
