Here’s a bit of 80’s pop culture/classic gamer porn for those of you who are into that kind of thing. It’s a bit over the top complicated but fun nonetheless. The year is 2044 and the internet has evolved into the OASIS. This is basically where everyone goes when they go online, and depending on your gear, you’ll wear wear haptic gloves, a head visor, and maybe even a haptic suit. While the OASIS was originally created as a gaming environment, it evolved into meeting […]
Arena
“Arena” is the debut novel by Holly Jennings, another subscription pick by my bookstore. “Arena” sat on my bookshelf for several months after coming home from the bookstore. The opening blurb on the inside cover reads, “EVERY WEEK, KALI LING FIGHTS TO THE DEATH ON NATIONAL TV. SHE’S DIED HUNDREDS OF TIMES. AND IT NEVER GETS EASIER…..”. After it stops shouting, you are informed how she is part of a Virtual Gaming League, competing in the premier tournament of the season. “And though their weapons and […]
Sleeping Giants
Or more accurately titled, “When I fell off the CBR wagon”. When I posted my last review, I was behind where I had hoped to be in June but hopeful for being able to successfully complete my half cannonball. Then I stopped reviewing what I had read and shortly thereafter stopped reading anything else out of guilt for the review backlog. I’m sure other Cannonballers have been here before. So, here I am trying to get back on track and vainly recall details of books […]
Probably the best book I’ve read all year
I knew this book would be great going in because it won both a Caldecott Honor and Printz Honor award, but I was still completely blown away. Definitely the most beautiful book I’ve read this year and maybe ever. I would hang so many of these panels up on my walls as standalone art. Not only is the art gobsmackingly stunning, the story is well written as well. Rose and Windy spend every summer together when their families stay in cabins at a lake in […]
Can’t believe I almost skipped this one
This book really surprised me. I loved The Likeness, but detective Frank Mackey was NOT a favorite character. I really considered skipping this one and moving on to book four of the series. I’m so glad I resisted temptation because Faithful Place ended up being my favorite so far. As with all her novels (at least the ones I’ve read!), French is just as interested in the characters and how they cope with events as she is in the mystery itself. Frank grew up poor […]
Sometimes it’s hard to be a woman
Alan Cumming mentioned After Leaving Mr. Mackenzie in a NYT piece on his ten favorite books. Having read and reviewed (and loved) Rhys’ well known classic Wide Sargasso Sea for CBR6, and being impressed with Mr. Cumming’s literary choices (seriously, check out that list; it’s gold), I decided to give After Leaving Mr. Mackenzie a go. While it isn’t a masterpiece like Wide Sargasso Sea, it is nonetheless a brilliant and bold novel. This is one of Rhys’ early novels, published in 1930 (Wide Sargasso […]
