An unique mystery

December 31, 2016 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

3.5 stars. This book fell just a little flat for me but I think that had more to do with my expectations than the actual book itself. It’s nice to finally pick up a genre book that isn’t all white people. This series centers on detectives Esa Khattak and Rachel Getty who work on culturally sensitive crimes up in Canada. When they’re called in to investigate the death of a wealthy businessman, Rachel can’t figure out what this has to do with their department and […]

Three murderous sisters

December 31, 2016 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

3.5 stars. I can’t fully bump this up to 4 stars despite the interesting premise and great ending. There’s too much set up here to really consider this one as having a full narrative arc. However, it’s a very promising start to a series and I’d really recommend it if you’re looking for darker young adult fantasy. Three Dark Crowns takes place in a world where every generation has a set up triplets born to the queen. These triplets are claimed by different factions and […]

Let’s take a moment to fangirl over Tana French

December 31, 2016 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

2016 was a shit year, no doubt about it. But perhaps the least shitty thing to come out of it was my love of Tana French. I won’t even apologize for gushing about her so much guys. If you haven’t read her books, you can’t understand. I read her first book way back in January and finished up her last one in December. It’s a tough call, but The Trespasser is the best of the bunch and that’s really saying something. Reallllllly saying something. I […]

A Superhero Thriller that Doesn’t Take Itself too Seriously

December 31, 2016 by genericwhitegirl Leave a Comment

This book is up there with Ready Player One and Lock In in terms of future and technology themes. It’s also similar to Mission Impossible and X-Men, among others. Basically, Myfanwy (rhymes with Tiffany), wakes up with no memory. Oh, and there’s dead people all around. But she finds clues to her situation in notes left by…herself? Or whoever was in her body before her? Still not clear on that. Myfanwy learns right away she can take the equivalent of the blue pill or the […]

On the bright side, no old people means they don’t have to read think pieces in The Atlantic about their generation ruining the world

December 31, 2016 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

This was definitely one of the strangest books I read in 2017. I think it might fall into the admired but unloved category. Sandra Newman clearly put a lot of work into creating this novel, it just didn’t quite resonate with me. That doesn’t mean it didn’t impact me though. I thought about this book for weeks afterwards, trying to puzzle out how I felt about it. The story takes place in some future where most of the population of America has died off and […]

Keeping things interesting

December 31, 2016 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

3.5 stars. The Secret Place was somewhat of a departure for Tana French. I’m not sure if it was quite as successful for me personally, but it makes me really happy to know she’s experimenting and keeping things fresh. She could just churn out novels and people would read them even with diminishing returns at this point. It makes me love her all the more to know that she has no intention of phoning it in. Detective Stephen Moran is surprised one morning to see […]
