Swing Time is a long read from Zadie Smith, about who we are and who we were and who we will be. The story is told out of linear time, and involves many flashbacks and continuing changes in the more recent past, building towards the final act, which also opens the book. It’s a little confusing, but it’s interesting to see how the narrator looks back over her own life and how her feelings change about her own reminiscing. There’s a feeling that her character […]
Gone without a trace
3.5 stars. Missing, Presumed starts with Detective Sergeant Manon Bradshaw at yet another lackluster internet date. It’s an interesting way to start a mystery novel. I think it was meant to be cringe-funny, but I only found myself cringing. I think Steiner was probably trying to introduce us to our main character outside of work so we’d get a broader picture of who she is. Manon’s someone without a lot of close ties and so lonely that she listens to her police scanner for fun. […]
Quick! Read this book before the movie comes out later this year!

‘Gilead’ Is A Balm For Trump’s America
“This is an interesting planet. It deserves all the attention you can give it.” Last week was a hard week for many of us. Facing the reality of Trump’s inauguration, I needed a book that was beautiful, calming, and familiar. As big as my stack of “to be read” books was, I needed something that I knew would give me temporary comfort. Gilead by Marilynne Robinson was really my only option. A favorite of President Obama’s (and a Pulitzer winner), Gilead tells the story […]
Everfair – Using steampunk to reimagine history
At some point this fall when visiting the bookstore, the cover of “Everfair” caught my eye. It went on my book wanted list based on the cover art and quote, “A book with gorgeous sweep, spanning years and continents, loves and hates, histories and fantasies… Everfair is sometimes sad, often luminous, and always original. A wonderful achievement. – Karen Joy Fowler”. The pairing of the mechanical and human hand with an intricate metal globed lamp between them suggested to me that this would be steampunk. […]
For those looking to be terrified by something other than reality right now
Imagine, if you will, being suddenly blinded and forced to navigate the world while protecting your two young children, all while unseen monsters stalk you. Thus is the premise of Josh Malerman’s debut novel Bird Box. The plot jumps around in time with some chapters taking place several years in the past, when reports of strange and disturbing events in Russia begin filtering onto U.S. news channels. Something that people are seeing is making them lose their minds, causing them to murder people and/or […]
