I picked this one up on sale, despite figuring I wouldn’t really be its target audience (I don’t know a Lanvin from a Latverian; fashion is something I stare at when I can’t sleep (or, well, it used to be when “Fashion Trance” was a thing). Delightfully, I was wrong.
I Didn’t Want This Book to End
I loved this book so very much. It was the warm, cozy blanket I needed in my life right now. I picked this up thanks to Jenny S’s review from a few weeks ago and I’m so glad I did. “Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not […]
“Hauntingly Intelligent” is a Bit Lofty Here
So, according to Amazon the full title is Valentina: A Hauntingly Intelligent Psychological Thriller. I really hope everything after the colon was added by the publisher as advertising and to help with search engine confusion and not actually what the author titled the book. If the author did add it… wow, someone’s got some pretty confident opinions of themselves. It’s not a bad book, I enjoyed it and read it in about three days. The plot clips along and there isn’t a lot of fat […]
Punny Titles are the Best
I love a good pun and Lumberjanes continually delivers. The title of the fifth volume plays on band in the literal and “come together” uses. Because this is the Lumberjanes, the literal band is made of mer-people, and coming together is one of the best traits of these hard core lady types. This collection of comics opens with a flash back to the first day of summer camp as we see each girl being dropped off. These scenes give us a brief peak into their […]
Friendship to the Max?
In volume four, Out of Time, the Lumberjanes once again are faced with supernatural forces but the real challenge comes from within. Jealousy and refusal to stand up for a friend can be devastating to friendships. In this collection of comics, Lumberjanes young and old grapple with the motto “Friendship to the Max”. What starts as an innocent camping trip with their long suffering councilor Jen, turns into a rescue mission when a blizzard mysteriously blankets the area. Separated from her girls, Jen is injured and […]
It’s not a fish, dammit! (Sorry, I needed to get that off my chest.)
I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I started reading Moby Dick. Of course everyone is familiar with Ahab and the Pequod and “Call me Ishmael,” possibly the most famous opening line in American literature. I knew that Starbuck was more than a source for satisfying my frappuccino craving and, thanks to Dana Scully’s ill-fated pomeranian, I knew there was a character called Queequeg, but that was about it. Opening to page 1 of this 135-chapter behemoth, I was pretty much a blank slate. My […]
