Mindless fun

December 30, 2017 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I think going into this book I was expecting something more like the Shades of Magic series, rather than the paranormal mystery novel that it was. I enjoyed it nevertheless and plan on reading the next book in the series when I can get my hands on it. Like any origin story, there’s a lot of set-up in this first book of the series. It was fun entering this version of London with a dark, fantastical side, but the actual plot was a bit light. […]

I’m here for the sloth sidekick

It wasn’t until after I had finished Zoo City that I realized the author is the same Lauren Beukes who wrote The Shining Girls which is a book I really enjoyed last year. The tonal range between these two novels is huge, so I’m really excited to read more of Beukes’ work. Technically they’re both fantasy, but The Shining Girls is horror mostly rooted in reality except for one piece of magic anchoring the entire tale, whereas Zoo City is infused with magic and a […]

Tournament of Losers by Megan Derr

December 30, 2017 by lahistoriadelmundo Leave a Comment

I stumbled on the works of Megan Derr by accident one day while searching for fractured (or twisted) fairytales. Since then she has become one of my favorite authors. In that first weekend alone I probably purchased and read 4 or 5 of her fractured fairytales and fairytale like short stories. Tournament of Losers falls into this category but is a fully flushed out story. In Tournament of Losers the main character, Rathatayen (please call me Rath) needs to pay off his father’s debt. The […]

Family drama meets science fiction

December 30, 2017 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

4.5 stars. This book was reviewed by both narfna and Fiat.Luxury who both raved about it. I can see why after reading it! It will absolutely be going on my list of Swiss Army recommendations list. I think most readers would like it, if not love it. Genre: Family drama with a little science fiction and mystery thrown in Read this if you loved: Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng or All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders In a […]

Just like Thanksgiving dinner, the sides are the best part!

December 30, 2017 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

Corpies is a spinoff of the Super Powereds books.  It fits between Super Powereds Year 2 and 3 – we hear a little bit about it in Year 3, but not much.  Hershel and Roy’s father, the hero called Titan, has decided to finally get off his ass and return to hero work.  He had previously left the hero business, or the Life, after a sex scandal ruined his reputation.  Not only was Titan caught having sex with someone other than his wife, but it […]

That Bee Life Hustle

December 30, 2017 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

The Bees by Laline Paull, another MGR read, follows an unusual worker bee named Flora 717. The entire novel is written from her perspective. It took me a few pages to realize Flora was an insect! It becomes rather obvious that she has a monotonous existence. She is essentially as garbage bee working sanitation for the hive. Her belly is unusually big, apparently seen as ugly by society. Somehow she is able to talk, unlike other worker bees. She is curious about other parts of […]
