My First Review for My First CBR

January 13, 2018 by Tracy 2 Comments

My partner is part of a book club at work, and I thought it might be fun to read the books myself, which is how I came across Orhan Pamuk’s Snow. The novel follows Ka, a Turkish poet living as a political exile in Germany for the past 12 years. After returning to Turkey for his mother’s funeral (which the book doesn’t spend any time on), he heads to the border town of Kars, ostensibly to write an article on girls who have been dying […]

“The House of Fiction Has Many Windows, But Only Two or Three Doors.”

January 10, 2018 by Ale Leave a Comment

It keeps surprising me that whenever I go looking for a book on writing, it’s much less a ‘how-to’ and much more a literary criticism of the Greats. This isn’t a bad thing, it’s just not what one expects when selecting a book called “How Fiction Works.” But Wood isn’t interested in telling his reader to go find a pen, write some words down and assess if they’re any good based on certain literary principles. Instead he presents us with what’s out there in the literary […]

An unnecessary sequel?

January 10, 2018 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

Dash and Lily met through a red moleskin notebook filled with dares. They egged each other on, two strangers galavanting around New York at Christmas time. They got to know each other through their writing, until their bit of fun turned into romance. The Twelve Days of Dash & Lily picks up a year after our couple met in Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares, and after an initial courtship straight out of a Rom-Com the real world has slammed into them, hard. Lily’s beloved […]

Left wanting more more more

January 9, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 2 Comments

Holy shit, this book was good. It started slow and then just kept building and building until the breathtaking ending. It was recommended to me by an extended family member and I’m so glad I didn’t just blow them off and actually picked it up. I hope Newman’s other books are as good, because I plan on reading them stat. Renata “Ren” Ghali lives in a colony on a far away world, working as the settlement’s engineer. She’s a respected member of the community, but […]

To quote Kesha, this place’s about to blow

I’ve been looking forward to reading this book for a while and it did not disappoint. Especially for a debut novel, it’s a very well put together story. I’m a bit retroactively disappointed that it didn’t win the Goodreads choice awards, but I suppose that’s to be expected. Aaron Falk is a Federal Agent working for Australia’s government, ferreting out financial criminals. He doesn’t live the most exciting life, but he’s comfortable and good at his job. When he gets called back to his hometown […]

Half a War – only kept me half engaged

January 9, 2018 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

In my review for Half the World, book two in the series, I said, “The two can’t stop worrying at each other and their eventual romance, with standard misunderstanding, is pretty predictable. Both characters have good arcs and come to happy endings, I just wasn’t as interested in their perspective of world events as I had Yarvi’s.  While I am interested in the events occurring around the Shattered Sea, and how Father Yarvi and Gettland will get through the eventual war that is coming, I hope that […]
