Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely

June 27, 2018 by Ale 4 Comments

Buzzfeed’s book reviews have never steered me wrong, so when one of their lists suggested The Power as a must-read Dystopian novel, I felt I should give it a go. And it was WORTH IT. Disturbing, mind-bending, and surprising, The Power feels like this generation’s answer to The Handmaids Tale. I was not surprised to read that Alderman thanks Margaret Atwood in her acknowledgements because the book follows an updated take on the The Handmaid’s Tale structure. Complete with excerpts from fictional archaeological findings to the mind blowing epilogue and […]

Evolutionary Biology is on notice

February 21, 2018 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

3.5 stars I like Cordelia Fine and her work. Part of that, I’m willing to admit, may be confirmation bias — she clearly identifies herself as a feminist and is very upfront that her work is reflective of that viewpoint. But I was also trained as a scientist, and from that perspective my position is that many of her critics and detractors (and I’ll note here that for brevity’s sake I’m not including in this category people who have fundamentally sexist views and who probably […]

feminism wrapped in a glittery pink bow? #nothanks

January 27, 2018 by Mrs Dillemma 2 Comments

At a time when gender politics are making headlines in every major newspaper every day Feminist Fight Club should be a must read, but I’m not so sure it is. Bennett’s fight is against the patriarchal construct not against individuals but what that then does is reduce her ability to discuss topics that are really at the heart of workplace sexism; sexual harassment and pay disparity. Neither topic gets but the  briefest of mentions. Bennett states that the Feminist Fight Club is about creating a […]

A useful little guide

December 28, 2017 by tillie Leave a Comment

This book arose from a letter to a friend. The friend had asked Adichie how to raise a feminist daughter and this book is Adichie’s answer. As books go it is fairly short, but I suppose that for a letter it is quite long. If you have read Adichie before (and if you haven’t you really should) her voice is strong and flowing in  this letter and I enjoyed reading it. I wanted to buy ten copies and just throw them at anybody who’s expecting. […]

Put a Ring on it

December 12, 2017 by Sophia 1 Comment

“But it’s an error to assume all marriages are good marriages, and to fall into the narrative trap laid by Disney and Shakespeare, the one in which a wedding is the satisfying conclusion of a story.” (146) Rebecca Traister immediately won points for naming her book, All the Single Ladies: Unmarried Women and the Rise of an Independent Nation (2016) after a Beyonce song. I found it–like so many of the books I read this year–through NPR’s list of Best Books from 2016. It is a serious look […]
