I’m a bad feminist! And you can be too!

February 4, 2016 by bonnie 2 Comments

When Bad Feminist first came out, it made the rounds amongst my grad student feminist friends, who all raved about it. I’d never read anything by Roxane Gay until her magical review of Magic Mike XXL (one of my favorite movies last summer), and I LOVED IT. Read it for yourself if you need evidence that you would enjoy Roxane Gay. You will. She’s amazing, and her writerly voice is so unique. My full review can be found at The Universe Disturbed, my personal blog. […]

Simply Whelmed, Not Over or Under

February 4, 2016 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

Okay: confession time. I read this because a) Emma Watson suggested it as her “Our Shared Shelf” group on Goodreads for January and b) I needed a non-fiction book about feminism or dealing with feminist themes for the 2016 Read Harder Challenge. This was not an “oh! I must read this book!” choice so much as a “well, if a whole group of people are going to read it, I might as well choose this one” choice. I am just young enough where Gloria Steinem […]

The Sisterhood of the Travelling Feminists

January 26, 2016 by expandingbookshelf 1 Comment

Gloria Steinem’s first book in more than two decades is classified as a memoir, but I don’t think that’s accurate. Although this first chapter starts like a traditional autobiography, documenting her unconventional childhood as the daughter of a travelling antique salesman and a mentally ill mother, the rest of the book is about the people she’s met. Her book is about the mothers and stewardesses and cabdrivers she’s talked to, the colleges where she’s spoken and the other feminist workers she’s worked with. At 81, […]

A Wild Ride

January 17, 2016 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

What in the world did I just read?! Nothing could have prepared me for the wild ride Bitch Planet took me on. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything so in-your-face before, but I liked it. Bitch Planet is like The Handmaid’s Tale times 11. Basically, any woman deemed noncompliant is rounded up and sent to a jail planet officially known as Auxiliary Compliance Outpost, colloquially known as Bitch Planet. Who decides if women are noncompliant? A council of holy “fathers” meets to judge offenders […]

An Original BAMF

January 15, 2016 by ModernLove 1 Comment

So we all know that RBG is one of the most badass ladies to ever rock the black robes (or, honestly, just one of the most badass in general). She has spent decades fighting for gender quality, fearlessly and tirelessly going after what she things is right. She’s played with the big boys and held her own. All this from a tiny little New Yorker with a thing for scrunchies. Who also, I’ve found out, can do more push ups at age 82 than I can at […]

Caged and enraged!

January 4, 2016 by Emmalita 10 Comments

A woman is running through a crowded street, apologizing and asking people to let her pass. A man is waiting impatiently in a room and begins to count down from 10. In the background you can see snippets of words and ads – “Less of you to love” “Fix you” “Obey.” The woman runs in the door, apologizing and asking, “who am I this time?” If you can hear the woman’s voice, you are on your way to BITCH PLANET! I read ElCicco, SavageCat and […]
