This is a great, depressing book. When I talked to a friend about what I was reading, she didn’t have a lot of interest in this one because, being a woman, she knows how much sexism is out there. Why read a book that is 400 pages of statistics and examples and narrative describing how rough it is to be a woman in the world when you’re living it? Because it’s important. It’s important to know that we aren’t alone. Plus, the book isn’t just […]
You guys will love this.
Okay, so at first I was reading this and it was enjoyable, but I’m thinking, “I don’t get the fuss.” And then I read like, three more pages, and I was in love. Whoops. Giant Days follows three college freshmen, Susan, Esther and Daisy. As the comic starts, they’ve been in school only about three weeks and have made fast friends with one another. Susan is our narrator. She’s smart and feministy and has a temper. Esther is very pale, pretty and “practically consumptive.” Daisy […]
A haunting reminder of what we can be: just boys grown tall.
Some spoilers below. My wife attempted this book a few months ago and it devastated her. For her, it was an unremitting wasteland of degraded women that, instead of highlighting the great strides towards equality that we’ve made, emblazoned the vast distance we’ve had to travel to become a society barely cognizant of the barriers still firmly in place. To read such a visceral recitation of subservience and lack of empowerment endangered her emotional equilibrium. So, despite near universal acclaim, I was somewhat reticent about […]
“Bitches gots to learn.”
I’ve been seeing reviews for the first volume of Bitch Planet pop up on CBR and Goodreads, so I was curious to see what it was all about. I’m always interested in new graphic novel volumes, especially while I wait not-so-patiently for the new volume of Saga to release. I figured it would be good for me to diversify, especially with woman-centered comics. Bitch Planet promises to be all that. Read my full review for my thoughts on intersectional feminism, as seen in this comic.
Shades of Red
This book is such a missed opportunity. When She Woke takes place some time in the future, in a dystopian United States where religion now supercedes politics. Hannah Payne has been arrested and charged with murder after she gets an abortion. Her punishment is “chroming”–her entire body is dyed red, signifying she is a murderer (Chromes can be yellow, orange, red, blue, green, or purple depending on their crime). It’s hard to say what this book is about, because a million things happen to Hannah […]
Don’t be deceived by the cover. This book will kick your ass.
The title and cover of this book are incredibly misleading. I knew to expect something a little different based on a few reviews, but if I had been going off first impressions, I would have expected a lighthearted beachy read. Something fluffy and deliciously fun. Dietland was fun, but not in fluffy way. One of the blurbs for it described it as Fight Club meets Margaret Atwood which is pretty spot on. The main character, Plum, tries her hardest to go unnoticed. She spends her […]
