Can slasher flicks be feminist?

May 6, 2017 by CosmoNewanda 4 Comments

Have you ever wondered about the gender representation of character types in horror flicks? How about the existence of female empowerment in rape revenge flicks? Does watching a rape or murder from the from the right perspective force men to identify with women? This book may help you answer those questions. I like most people had the preconception that horror films and their sub-genre slasher flicks were just escapism. In her book Men, Women, and Chain Saw: Gender in the Modern Horror Film, Carol J. Clover […]

Rebecca Explains it All (In a Good Way!)

April 28, 2017 by Blingle Bells Leave a Comment

3.5 stars, rounding down because when I think back on it (I finished it a few weeks ago), the things that bugged me stick out more than the things that didn’t. This might’ve been a four star book for me if I’d checked at all on what it actually was. I’d hoped it would be a deeper dive into the title concept, aka “mainsplaining” (although Solnit herself did not coin that term and is not a fan of it). The title essay was fantastic, so […]

So. Many. Straw. (Wo)men.

April 15, 2017 by ASKReviews 2 Comments

Best for: People interested in feminist critique who have a lot of patience. In a nutshell: There is something called universal feminism, which is what feminism is now. And it is bad, because it is not doing nearly enough. Also, if you don’t worship Andrea Dworkin, you are the worst. Line that sticks with me: “It’s easier to complain about the power you don’t have than to think about how you are wielding the power you do have.” (p 83) Why I chose it: Someone […]

Glad I’m Not In Gilead

April 14, 2017 by Julie 2 Comments

The odds are good that you’ve already read this book, so I don’t really need to tell you what it’s about.  But on the off-chance that you haven’t even heard of it, let’s just say that it’s a page from a future nightmare, a dystopian society where a woman’s role is either a housekeeper, a wife, or a handmaid.  Women in this world don’t have jobs outside the house, and have no money of their own.  If the woman is the wife of a wealthy man, […]

Furry, Non-Cannibalistic Llamas

April 11, 2017 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

Kameron Hurley’s collection of essays is incredibly prescient to the world around us, as women continue to suffer an unheralded epidemic of violence. In The Geek Feminist Revolution Hurley isn’t just focused on that, but she brings around the idea that the type, quality, and diversity of pop culture we consume and produce is directly affected by the cultural norms which lead to the erasure of women in public spaces, and the violence experienced by this group and others who are erased. I wish I […]

A master class in feminism for everyone.

April 8, 2017 by bonnie Leave a Comment

If you’ve never read We Should All Be Feminists, stop reading this review, pick up that book, and come back when you’re ready. This is your master class in feminism, and the first book will build the steps that will help you really enact livable feminism in your life. Back? Awesome! Now you’re ready to carry on the work and take it another step further. Adichie, who’s become a voice of contemporary feminism, was asked to write suggestions on how to raise a feminist daughter. […]
