A Court of Fun and Nonsense

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas

August 28, 2019 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

I waited way, way too long to review these properly (my MO for this entire Cannonball), so my scattered impressions are these: º Sarah J Maas has a real talent for world-building and concepts. Her depictions of the fae in this book and in her other series are rooted in just enough common fae lore that she doesn’t have to get bogged down filling in lots of backward detail, but she of course contributes enough of her own unique features that they aren’t interchangeable across […]

Even worse now than it was when it was first published

Iced (Fever #6) by Karen Marie Moning

August 26, 2019 by alwaysanswerb 3 Comments

Re-Read – August 2019: I first read and reviewed this 6 years ago and didn’t really enjoy it. But this summer, I wanted to revisit all of the Fever books, having been a big fan of the initial run of 5 in the series. And although my general feeling going into Iced was that this and the follow-up Burned were the weakest among them, I was actually a little cautiously optimistic that I might enjoy them more this time. A big part of that comes […]

I was bored but I read them all anyway, so joke’s on me

Written in Red by Anne Bishop

Murder of Crows by Anne Bishop

Vision in Silver by Anne Bishop

Marked in Flesh by Anne Bishop

Etched in Bone by Anne Bishop

Anne Bishop’s The Others series is a little bit odd. There is a lot in the books that is cool, interesting, and different, but I also found parts of the books to be tedious and amateurish. Bishop is not some green writer, so I can only assume that it’s just her style… which makes me hesitant to seek out her other books. I finished out this series because I was sufficiently curious how it would end, but overall I felt that the books didn’t quite […]

“The world was going crazy. Nothing left to do but hold on and yell “Wheee!” at strategic moments.”

Magic Triumphs (Kate Daniels #10) by Ilona Andrews

June 14, 2019 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

I was holding out on reading this, the final book in Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniel series, for a long time. Over the years, these books were warm stew, a thick blanket, and a campfire. They were familiar, comfortable, and satisfying, every time. After the first 9 books, as a reader, I wondered how on earth it was going to finish. It seemed impossible, because we knew that as powerful as Kate was, Roland, her father and enemy, was even moreso, and even if she could […]

“One could plot violent espionage and still hope for dessert.”

King of Scars (Nikolai Duology #1) by Leigh Bardugo

June 14, 2019 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

I’m trash for the whole Grishaverse, so of course I loved this. If anyone else, like me, enjoyed both previous series and ever thought to themselves, “Hey, you know what would be great, a sequel to the Grisha trilogy that feels more thematically like Six of Crows?” you’re in luck! Because that’s this book. We’re back with some of our favorite characters from both all of the books, and they’ve all been through some shit, so they’re all a little bit (or a lot bit) […]

“One had followed the rules, and one had not. But the problem with rules… was that they implied a right way and a wrong way to do things.”

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

June 14, 2019 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

Celeste Ng seems to like to write books where it seems like they start with a mystery or crime scene, but the book isn’t really about the mystery. Things don’t get solved. People don’t get closure or absolution. You’re led to the end as a reader, but you feel just as lost as the characters surely do. Here’s the summary bit from Goodreads: In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is meticulously planned – from the layout of the winding roads, to […]
