Hair Power

Witchy by Ariel Slamet Ries

November 24, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Witchy fells kind of familiar; there’s the adolescent with a secret who doesn’t quite fit into their magical world (Nyneve), the kind friend, the former antagonist turned maybe ally (or not) Prill, the seemingly grandfatherly leader of the magical world, the spooky granny figure who provides information and advice, etc. The concept of the magic system is interesting (power usually tied to hair length; more hair suggests stronger power, but too much hair, and the magical police come to execute you (witch burning)) and the […]

Only read if you really love these characters.

Time's Convert by Deborah Harkness

November 22, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I have a weird relationship with Deborah Harkness’s books. I liked her All Souls trilogy, but I also recognize that it has some significant problems (that I won’t get into here). I had assumed those feelings would carry over to this book, a sequel to the trilogy, essentially. It’s billed as being about Marcus and Phoebe’s relationship, but it’s actually just an extended epilogue and very little happens that is of consequence. It’s also very weird. The book is split in three parts. First is […]

A big disappointment.

The City of Dusk (The Dark Gods, #1) by Tara Sim

November 21, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

On the surface, I can’t really point to any specific reason for my low rating here, so you can write this review off as this simply being the wrong book for the wrong reader, if you want. I do want to say up front that the complaint I’m seeing from most people is that this book “reads like YA”, whatever that means. I don’t agree. This is an adult fantasy book. The characters are younger adults, like age eighteen to mid-twenties, but the writing itself is […]

“It was time for something new:” Cozy Fantasy During a Chilly Fall is the Best

Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree

November 16, 2022 by GentleRain 5 Comments

I unfortunately can’t remember whose review on here stuck in my mind and got me to buy this book this weekend, but thank you once again to the Cannonball community for their great recommendations! I was wandering around the Strand and this was a random add-on to my pile based off the hazy recollection that this was well reviewed. This book was a nice treat after reading a bunch of 70s sci-fi that had me questioning if I even actually like genre fiction. Fortunately cozy […]

A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows

November 14, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

When I first finished this in July and gave it five stars, I predicted that most people wouldn’t love it as much as I did, and I was right. It also unfortunately came out at the same time as Alexandra Rowland’s A Taste of Gold and Iron, which is pretty similar in story and theme (I haven’t read it yet, though I do have it out from the library), and most people have preferred it to A Strange and Stubborn Endurance. I think this is […]

“I am but a verse inspired by your chorus, and I will follow you until the end, when the isle takes my bones and my name is nothing more than a remembrance on a headstone, next to yours.”

A River Enchanted (Elements of Cadence, #1) by Rebecca Ross

November 13, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

A River Enchanted is a slower-paced, highly atmospheric, character-based fantasy set on a magical island inspired by Scottish folklore. I found it a very satisfying, almost cozy read, but if you are looking for something with more action and plot, this is not the book for you. The book follows four main characters: Jack, a bard who has come home to the island for the first time in over ten years; Adaira, the daughter of the clan leader; Sidra, a healer; and her husband and […]
