The women of The Odyssey, except eighteen years afterwards, as narrated by Hera.

Ithaca (The Songs of Penelope, #1) by Claire North

January 31, 2023 by narfna 2 Comments

I really, really liked this! Claire North’s writing style translated extremely well to retelling Greek mythology. The undercurrent of female rage and sorrow was pleasing and upsetting at the same time. It’s also darkly funny. I almost feel like I want to re-read this before I write a review so I can get my thoughts more in order, but nobody has time for that. Or, maybe some people do, but I don’t know who they are. I just feel like it was so well done! […]

Cosplay jerk needs to get over herself

Dust and Grim by Chuck Wendig

January 29, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ve had Dust & Grim on my TBR for a little while, and when I was in the bookstore for one thing online said they had but they didn’t, I didn’t want to leave sans book, so I picked up this. Overall, it’s a decent spooky middle grade/YA tale about newly discovered siblings and the family business, a funeral home for the supernatural; don’t say “monster”, that’s offensive. The only real problem was that I did not ever really take a liking to the main […]

Dangerous Flames

Two words: Sapphic. Necromancers.

Dangerous Flames by Stephanie Burgis

January 28, 2023 by llamareadsbooks Leave a Comment

With Mia and Leander fairly well settled in Hapthorn, it’s fallen to Carmilla, Countess Cardenza, to investigate the last loose threads from the previous novella. But first, she has to not kill anyone at their wedding, not even her annoying (-ly beautiful) old flame. That’s right, it’s a second-chance sapphic romance between two necromancers! Carmilla’s taken it upon herself to check each and every bit of bland, boring respectable wedding preparations to avoid any nasty surprises. Sure, Leander’s undead minions are doing a great job […]

“We can only keep moving forward and try our best to make reparations to the little world we live in.”

Looking For Her by Chan Chau

January 28, 2023 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

This was a fun preorder gift to myself — I completely forgot that I’d ordered this so it was a nice surprise package when I got home one day. Chan Chau is one of my favorite artists and I’m glad I got the chance to have a physical copy of this comic. You can also currently read it for free online but there’s something very satisfying about the physical package and slotting it in place on the shelf. Also I now never have to worry […]

“They were pilgrims. They were cosmonauts. They were as good as dead.”

Hell Bent (Alex Stern, #2) by Leigh Bardugo

January 26, 2023 by narfna 2 Comments

Just like with the first book, I feel like I need to turn around and read this again from the beginning to really get a handle on my feelings about what happened. This book is even more intense, and is basically non-stop plot for its entirety. And, once again, Bardugo doesn’t write linearly, which adds an additional layer of intrigue and makes you want to turn the pages faster because she knows what to tease and when to explain. Yeah, it was really good. Spoilers […]

Cursed Princess Club

Subverting fairy tale tropes… and llamas!

Cursed Princess Club vol 1 by LambCat

January 25, 2023 by llamareadsbooks 2 Comments

I’ve become a huge fan of webtoons/tapas/etc lately. So when I saw the amusing cover art, I couldn’t resist picking this up and I’m so glad I did. This is a silly and sweet graphic novel that gleefully subverts the usual fairy tale tropes. Gwen is the youngest daughter of the King of the Pastel Kingdom. Rather than a room full of cute forest animals or an enchanted garden like her older sisters, Gwen attracts a possum who keeps biting her head. She’s kind and […]
