Not the last unicorn or dragon either

I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons by Peter S. Beagle

October 15, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 22: And also…. I’m Afraid You’ve Got Dragons could fit either the dreams or the cult squares, so either way, it’s an And Also square. The cult comes in that the author is Peter S. Beagle who is probably much better known for The Last Unicorn, which is a cult classic, with a cult following, etc, you get the idea. I’ve actually never read that, in spite of being of the age to have grown up on that title; my late father was the […]

Infinity War – But Even Better

Wicked Problems by Max Gladstone

October 6, 2024 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

Earlier this year, I reviewed Dead Country, a newer installment in Max Gladstone’s Craft Sequence. Dead Country was an unusual entry in the series with its simpler parred back narrative and more personal focus— until we hit the end of course. That’s when a then-low lying series-spanning threat suddenly decided to make itself known. This leads us to Wicked Problems, which deals with the massive fallout. Tara had previously returned to Edgemont to deal with the aftermath of her father’s death, and while there, had […]

Lady Macbeth by Ava Reid

October 2, 2024 by dreadpiratekel Leave a Comment

This is a retelling of Shakespeare’s Macbeth focused on Lady Macbeth. This version is split into five acts (just like the play!), with Lady Macbeth as a 17-year-old new bride of the title character. Something I found particularly interesting is that the author chose to reflect the various languages spoken in eleventh-century Scotland, so the characters have different versions of their names depending on the language used. In the book, the main character thinks of herself as Roscille, so for the sake of this review, […]

Free the Press. Free the Truth

Ink Girls by Marieke Nijkamp

October 1, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ink Girls by Marieke Nijkamp and illustrated by Sylvia Bi could be called “one of “those protest books.” And maybe that is the best way to start the review. However, it is more than that. It is about how we see ourselves and others see us. It is about learning to stand up for what is right and not the easy thing. It is about how the youth of a community/city can be a strong voice regardless of being “young.” There is found/finding family (one […]

A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher

September 27, 2024 by narfna 2 Comments

Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the contents of my review. Ugh, bad ARC reviewer. I’ve had this book finished since the end of August and I’ve been totally dragging my feet on this review for some reason. And it was a good, fun book! You should read it! T. Kingfisher basically has three types of book at this point: 1) Cozy horror, 2) Fantasy romance, and 3) Fairytale-esque dark(ish) fantasy. This book falls into the third category. It […]

Call it Dragons Eleven

The Sky on Fire by Jenn Lyons

September 23, 2024 by dreadpiratekel 5 Comments

What do I often say I want in a book? I say I want a nice standalone fantasy novel. But when I read a standalone fantasy novel that I enjoy, I find myself thinking, “No wait! I want more time with these specific characters in this world.” I guess you have to be careful what you wish for because you might just get it. Now that I’ve finished The Sky on Fire by Jenn Lyons, I’m sitting here wanting more. For this review, I also […]
