I was kind of lost, too

Superman: Lost by Christopher Priest

May 9, 2025 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

This was another Kareem Abdul-Jabbar pick and while I liked it, I did not find it as compelling as Famous Last Words. Superman: Lost is a graphic novel that involves time travel, PTSD, despair and hope. It is a commentary on our current political climate but also a reflection on our responsibility toward others and the duty to help those in danger, even when our help is unwanted. The story opens with Superman and the members of the Justice League going on a mission. Clark […]

“Once upon a time, there was a human girl stolen away by faeries, and because of that, she swore to destroy them.”

The Wicked King by Holly Black

May 1, 2025 by bjornsnipe 4 Comments

And the hits keep coming and they don’t stop coming. Jude has succeeded in her plans; her brother Oak, heir to the throne of Faerie is safe; Cardan sits on the throne in his stead, with Jude as the power behind the throne. If only Cardan wasn’t trying to thwart her at every turn, enemies weren’t behind every corner, someone close to her wasn’t planning to betray her, and Jude hadn’t accidentally caught the feels for Cardan. As the promised year of Cardan’s semi-obedience to […]

We Ride Upon Sticks by Quan Barry

My Cannonball Read holiday gift exchange buddy got me this book (thank you!!!) and if they picked it because they have read it and liked it or just took a crack at my taste from my Goodreads, I’m pretty sure we would be good pals. I don’t remember (or know) who that was, so if you see this and it’s you, find me on the ‘gram at @cheerbrarian. It’s 1989 and the Danvers High Varsity field hockey team hasn’t historically been award winning, but this […]

Metamorphoses for a New Millennium

Fit For the Gods by Jenn Northington (Editor), S. Zainab Williams (Editor)

April 26, 2025 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Though Greek mythology originates from several millennia ago, their stories have been renewed again and again over the centuries through art and literature. In this anthology, more than a dozen authors tackle this too – but their tellings are with a twist, bringing racially, sexually, and culturally diverse takes to the classic stories. I’ve always loved Greek mythology and have engaged with in a plethora of ways, from reading classic translations to the Percy Jackson books to the recent trend in novel-length unpackings like Madeline […]

My 2025 Robin Hobb journey continues

Assassin's Quest by Robin Hobb

April 21, 2025 by Fiat.Luxury 2 Comments

This was my beach vacation read and I have to say I’m on the fence about it. That’s not to say that  I did not stay up way past bedtime to finish this (I did) or that I’m disenchanted with Hobb (not in the least).  I just felt that it wasn’t quite as strong as the second book and not as enchanting and well-paced as the Liveship Trilogy. A high bar, to be sure, but there we are. I have some notes! I will try […]

You Cannot be Unchosen

The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera

April 15, 2025 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

It’s been a while since I’ve had so much difficulty writing a book review. This has nothing to do with my current work load, or even with the book being bad—far from it, the book is absolutely brilliant. You can see why it won a Nebula. It’s just surreal And a little opaque. But in a very impressive way. Especially when you consider that this is the author’s debut novel.  The Saint of Bright Doors is the story of a young man named Fetter, who […]
