Review #7: I felt so old reading Fourth Wing

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

December 28, 2023 by Monty 11 Comments

My sister and her husband wanted me to read Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros – neither of them read much (if any) fantasy, so I was curious what had made them pay attention to this novel. After thinking long and hard about it, I believe it was two things: 1. Hype 2. Accessibility First, the publisher’s description: “Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered […]

The Serpent & The Wings of Night (Crowns of Nyaxia, #1) by Carissa Broadbent

This was fun! I mean, as much fun as a gruesome and bloody murder competition can be, set in a world where humans are food because it is almost entirely populated by vampires. I wonder how much the edited version will change. I would re-read to find out! Our main character is Oraya, a human who was raised by the vampire king since she was a small child. He took her from the village he slaughtered. He was just like, oh yeah I’m gonna save […]

Whoa buddy, was this a DNF.

The Curse of Saints (The Curse of Saints, #1) by Kate Dramis

DNF @ 33% I am SO UPSET about this one. The edition I have is BEAUTIFUL. It is almost perfectly suited to my personal aesthetics. I am not immune to a bit of magical thinking, so my brain latching on to how beautiful the book also simultaneously planted a vicious little expectation that I was going to love the insides, too. UNFORTUNATELY HOWEVER. Cynical statement of the day: This is why you should never have expectations. So this book is about a young woman named Aya […]

I turned my worry into anger, and my anger into fuel.

The Hanged Man: The Tarot Sequence Book Two by K.D. Edwards

November 7, 2023 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

Brand closed his eyes. He kept his thoughts to himself but, in his brain, I had no doubt he was filing the swear jar like it was a slot machine. ― K.D. Edwards, The Hourglass Throne This is the second book in The Tarot Sequence trilogy, and it picks up a couple of months after the end of the first book. There is a novella, “The Sunken Mall,” which takes place between books one and two. However, since I did not learn about it until […]

Truly, I do not understand why this is beloved.

From Blood and Ash (From Blood and Ash, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 3 Book 9/30 Hahahah, what am I going to say about this book? I have no idea! We’ll see what comes out once I start typing the rest of this review. Okay, for those of you who don’t know, this is a fantasy romance about Poppy, who is the “Maiden” (don’t worry, the precise definition of what this really means will never become clear) and she lives in a world where people can Ascend to a type of limited […]

“If I can only use my magic when you deem it safe, does that magic belong to me, or you?”

The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk

October 23, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 3 Book 2/30 Whoops, I slept on this one. Should have read it sooner! Because it was a delight. You know, if you’re defining “delight” as something that purposefully stokes your anger and your sense of righteousness by making you feel protective of the civil rights and bodily autonomy of fictional characters. With magic! So I guess that is how I define “delight.” I’m not going to go too deep into the world here because part of the fun […]
