Through the grieving process

Bon Voyage, Mister Rodriguez by Christiane Duchesne

The Immortal Jellyfish by Sang Miao

December 30, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Today, two books arrived for a customer. I figured these books were new, being promoted or had a contemporary theme as they were purchasing two copies each. They are important as they both deal with the deal of an older male/grandfather. This tricky subject has books that really work or do not depending on beliefs. In November 2019 we saw Bon Voyage, Mister Rodriguez and August 2019 The Immortal Jellyfish published. While they might not be my personal first choices, they were lovely books that […]

When Everyone Was Fast Asleep a Cat woke them up….

When Everyone Was Fast Asleep by Tomie dePaola

May 14, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When Everyone Was Fast Asleep the fog wakes up the narrators with Token and off to the king’s ball they go. Along the way, they have a few small adventures and at the end of the night, the two of them are happy and tucked safely back into their beds. When Everyone Was Fast Asleep is a much more poetic story than other books by Tomie dePaola. It also is a less solid story than usual (there is a story yet, it is no Strega Nona). […]

Avoid the man-eating walking dead that periodically drag themselves out of a fetid lake

Broxo by Zack Giallongo

February 19, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I will start with that this review is based on a one time reading. See end for a comment on this. Broxo by Zack Giallongo is a graphic novel that from page one always felt like it was missing something. Like this was book two and not a first book. Like it was starting in the middle of a story and had already fleshed out the characters in previous books. However, from what I can tell, this was a stand-alone book that should have had […]

Your Roman holiday

December 21, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The one thing I have noticed with The Magic Tree House series, you do have to read them in order. As an adult, I can pick up something, but in Vacation Under the Volcano #13, Jack and Annie have had so many adventures you need to know some of the pieces of information given before to help explain a few things. However, it is a standalone title if you and your child talk about it. The story is basic: Jack and Annie go to Ancient […]

Welcome to the Neighborhood

November 21, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Cardboard Kingdom is a graphic novel that follows a neighborhood of kids who transform ordinary cardboard into fantastical costumes as they explore life, family, friends and themselves. Created and drawn by Chad Sell we see a world that we probably have all lived in at one point. Who has not been “the loud girl” or known “the bully” or had that “little minion” kid sister? Or maybe you are the boy who wants to be the “Sorceress” or is the young lady who is the […]

Are you Never Satisfied?

September 10, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Never Satisfied: The Story of the Stonecutter by Dave Horowitz is a folktale about learning to be careful what you wish for. You just might get it. The Stonecutter is a good stonecutter, but it is hard work and is not satisfied with what he has. He thinks there must be something better. And there is! Being a business man sipping tea. But then he sees something else he wants even more….and after each wish he gets what he wants, but still is not satisfied. […]
