Dice & Deathtraps is not D&D but you know it’s D&D

The Last Session Vol. 1 by Jasmine Walls

September 19, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Have you ever played a Dungeons & Dragons game or a D&D like game? Have you had envy and/or jealousy of a friend’s friend/girlfriend/boyfriend/partner? Are you not a fan of change; even good changes? Are you queer? Do you like comics/graphic novels? Do you like stories about things like that in graphic novel format? Then this is the book for you.  For the most part, in The Last Session Vol. 1 by Jasmine Walls, Dozerdraws (Illustrator), and Micah Myers (Letterer), the story is familiar. The […]

The Brothers 3 and their Dad and this person name Carey do a really cool series

The Adventure Zone Vol. 4: The Crystal Kingdom by Clint McElroy, Carey Pietsch (Artist), Griffin McElroy, Travis McElroy, Justin McElroy

The Adventure Zone, Vol. 5: The Eleventh Hour by Clint McElroy, Carey Pietsch (Artist), Griffin McElroy, Travis McElroy, Justin McElroy

This probably goes without saying, but I will say it, “Read volumes one to three first.”  So, why am I writing this review for volumes four and five? To let you know that the series gets better as it goes along. Now, things might be a bit slow for the old school reader of D&D like graphic novels (especially at first), but the humor and accessibility for the newbie or someone not fully familiar with that format can get into it. I once gave a […]

Taking on the role of Isaac

Buzzing by Samuel Sattin

March 21, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Buzzing is more of a 3.5 as an averaged out score than either a 3 or a 4.  I enjoyed seeing the changes in the illustrations to show the emotions, feelings, and how our main character is reacting. This is clever and a unique way of helping us see the situation. However, I never felt any one character was overly fleshed out and none felt “real” and more of a bit of a cliché. At the same time there are a lot of good pieces […]

I keep finding new books to read and then review!

Table Titans Club by Scott Kurtz

December 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I like a good graphic novel. I like ones that capture relatable subjects and can be humorous. And of course, I like serious ones too, but I was in the mood for something that was funny. And Table Titans Club (I am assuming it is the first in a series, since how it ended) looked funny. Scott Kurtz did not disappoint.  The story of three friends (Alan, Darius and Andrew) who ask the new girl Val (though reluctantly on Alan’s part), and the dismay of their sort-of friend Kate, to […]
