Kickstarter kickstart: when fandom and real life collide

February 8, 2016 by Jak 2 Comments

Disclaimer: I love fanfic. A lot. Disclaimer the second: I am Australian. Hopefully my spelling and vocab make sense. Many years ago,  I watched an episode of Buffy and thought, “I wonder what other people thought about this?” From a simple Yahoo search (this was pre-Google) I found forums, then it was a quick descent (or ascent, depending on the showrunner) into fanfic. So imagine my joy when some big names in fandom announced they were starting up their own publishing company with the express purpose of promoting […]

History has its eyes on you

February 7, 2016 by baxlala 2 Comments

I dug this book. I wasn’t sure at first, because it was another novel where the heroine is forced into a new situation because of DESTINY and has to learn how to deal, etc. But guys, there is so much to like here. For instance: This heroine (Kelsea) has her shit together. She’s smart, stubborn, and brave, and does what she thinks is right, even if it’s not easy. She’s not beautiful. The heroines in these novels are always the most (understated) beautiful women the […]

Raise a glass to the four of us, tomorrow there’ll be more of us

February 7, 2016 by baxlala Leave a Comment

Soooooooooo, I definitely thought this was the last book in the series while I was reading it. But NOPE. I’m not sure I’ll read more, though. I mean, there’s more story there, for sure, but it also felt kind of…complete. I’m not sure I even want to read any more. I’ve enjoyed these books but I’m not sure I’m tied up in them enough to continue. Reading the reviews of this book on Goodreads only cemented that fact. People over there are REALLY REALLY into […]

How Do They Rise Up?

February 7, 2016 by Fabius Maximus Leave a Comment

The following contains minor spoilers. Wading through ash “What if the Dark Lord won?” is the tagline of The Final Empire, the first book in Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series. The Lord Ruler rules the Final Empire as a god-king, immortal, immensely powerful and all-knowing. According to legend, he vanquished the Deepness, an unknown evil which would have destroyed the world otherwise. As it is, the battle resulted in massive volcanic eruptions that changed the environment to an ash-covered waste with little vegetation that is barely […]

Don’t let the colors fool you

February 2, 2016 by tillie Leave a Comment

ODY-C is based on Homer’s Odyssey in a world where Zeus has killed off most of the men. ODY-C is a genderbent interpretation that’s completely warped out of its own mind in a psychedelic sci-fi god-ruled outer space. I mean the whole thing is nuts. Crazy colors, and sexual innuendos all over the place; think women breaking down doors with giant phallos’ and vagina-like spaceships. But don’t let the colors fool you. This is not an explosion of a book, it’s a slow, heavy journey. […]

Oh, the feels

February 1, 2016 by NVVN 4 Comments

Confession time: I was a lonely kid.  My childhood wasn’t the greatest and tons of bad things happened.  My toys and cartoons were my best friends.  I’m not sure where I’d be if I didn’t have those little things.  I think things would have been so much better if I had a Little Robot. There’s a little girl who lives in a trailer park.  We don’t know how old she is, but she’s apparently too young for school since there’s a scene where she watches […]
