With this review, I’ve hit my Quarter-Cannonball goal! And I did it before the end of December this time! Chapter 6: I notice something I’ve never noticed before. Oddly always wears a star on her shirt, as does her Auntie Oddly. The more “traditional” witches wear a crescent moon as their symbol. Auntie Oddly cements her awesomeness. She’s obviously very powerful, although she sometimes seems a little sad despite her effervescent personality. Chapter 7: We get to see something lovely. Auntie shows Oddly a memory […]
There’s a sequel? Yes, please!
“A Gathering of Shadows” is the sequel to “A Darker Shade of Magic” by V.E. Schwab who is perhaps better known as the YA and Scholastic author Victoria Schwab. I was introduced to her by my favorite independent bookstore when it featured A Darker Shade of Magic as it’s speculative fiction pick of the month last year. Filled with energy, adventure and characters you come to feel for, ADSoM was one of my favorite books of 2015. The end wraps things up nicely and so I […]
Oddly Normal is my gateway drug
I’m not much of a comic book reader, but I found the work of Otis Frampton at the New York Comic Con and fell in love with it. I searched out Mr. Frampton because of the preview of Oddly Normal I had found before attending my first Comic Con. I had spent the entire time I was there looking for an issue of Oddly Normal, and was delighted to find one (at the last minute!) at the table Mr. Frampton was manning in Artist Alley. […]
The Journey is the Destination
This book has one of the coolest covers I have seen in a long time, and I’m happy to say that the book lives up to its cover. I was drawn to this novel after reading a review that compared it to the Odyssey. This is the story of 17-year-old Blue Riley and her arduous, perilous quest to find her older sister, missing for two years. It is also the story of Blue discovering the truth about the past and finding her voice (literally). The […]
And the Streak of Disappointment is broken!
I have been on a roll lately and not in a good way. It seems like nearly everything I’ve read the past two months or so has been somehow disappointing. I’m very pleased to announce that the losing streak is over thanks to The Rook. And what’s better, the sequel, Stiletto, is coming out in a matter of weeks (June 14 to be exact)! I’m so excited!! Myfanwy (she pronounces it to rhyme with ‘Tiffany’, although the authentic Welsh pronunciation would be different) Thomas suddenly […]
A Book Without Character(s)
I don’t understand how it is possible for a novel about time travel back to the Middle Ages can be so boring. And not just dull, but hard to read. Doomsday Book is supposed to be a classic work of fantasy that gets realistic with its presentation of the Middle Ages. An Oxford student (Kivrin) wants to visit the Middle Ages for study which have finally been made available for study, having been previously been deemed to dangerous (plague, wars, bandits, etc.) Her mentor Dunworthy […]
