This is a solid 3.5 star anthology collection. Most of the stories were good, not great, and a few were wonderful. I’m thinking particularly of “The Beautiful Bastard,” which shows us a pre-Gurkish torture ruination Glokta, and the very entertaining “Two’s Company,” which takes two characters that form the backbone of this collection, and pairs them with my personal favorite Abercrombie character, Whirrun of Bligh, aka Cracknut (’cause his nut is cracked). Even though all of these stories could be read on their own, Abercrombie […]
He just keeps writing them, doesn’t he.
On the one hand, this is the most predictable, tired thing Riordan has ever written. And on the other . . . it was really fun. I’m so conflicted. Firstly, you really can’t go into this book not having read all the other Percy Jackson books beforehand. You will spoil the other books for yourself, which sucks, but more importantly, this book leans on the emotions and plots created in those series. You just won’t care very much about certain things that happen in this […]
Epic book is epic.
YOU GUYS, HI. THIS BOOK WAS SO THIS BOOK. WHAT WORDS TO USE I DO NOT KNOW. MUCH FLOUNDERING. BOOK HAS CREATED NOOK FOR ITSELF IN BRAIN AND IMPRINTED DEMON SHADOW IN NEURAL CELLS FOREVER. CAUSES TO TYPE ALL CAPS OH NO. Okay, I’ll stop now. But seriously. THIS BOOK, THIS @(*&#$%* BOOK. I have been meaning to read The Stand for yearrrrs now, but I kept putting it off. Ever since I discovered about four to five years ago that Stephen King’s storytelling was […]
Buckle. The Fuck. Up.
Like Tyrion Lannister, I used to be a cynic. I thought it possible there were not truly original ideas left in fiction. I used to think, after so many years of reading like it was my job, there weren’t any books left that would knock me on my ass, keep me awake until 4 a.m. when I had to work in the morning, cause me to be so engrossed that I literally did not hear my friends trying to get my attention. I thought I […]
Everything old is new again, and I want to inhale it all
This is the first time since The Passage that my brain has DEMANDED MORE when I’ve gotten to the end of a Book 1. I want, I want, I want. I freaking fracking loved Red Rising, and it was a huge surprise to me, because as per uzh, I had totally forgotten what the book was about by the time it was checked out to me, making it a totally shocking, harsh deep dive into an incredibly complete and consuming future dystopia. There’s a lot […]
In Russia, dragon flies you
(note before I start this review: HALF CANNONBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!) At this point, Blood of Tyrants being the eighth book in the Temeraire series, I am still very much on board the Temeraire train, but reading all of them in a row without the benefit of waiting between books (other than brief stints when the library is out of copies of whatever’s next) has meant that a certain fatigue has set in. I think I said in an earlier review that Novik has an incredible way of […]
