I’ll live in the modern mundane world, thanks

November 27, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

The series title is more informative than the book title here. Between Two Thorns is volume 1 of the Split World series. World 1 is Mundanus, modern reality as most of us know it. World 2, The Nether, is a connected alternate reality set in Victorian era society where various clans ruled by individual Fae live as immortals. Cathy is born into one of the most prominent wealthy families in the Nether but she does not fit in. She doesn’t like the strict social rules […]

Harry, stop objectifying the Queen of Air and Darkness. She will END YOU.

This re-read has been a success so far. Weird, but good weird. It was weird revisiting the first three books, which I originally didn’t like enough to continue the series, on audio for the first time. I knew that James Marsters was a huge part of the reason I ended up liking this series so much, but I don’t think I realized just how much until starting this re-read. I liked the first three books more on re-read in large part because I’m invested in […]

Being in one’s body

November 21, 2016 by sistercoyote Leave a Comment

Dust Bath Revival is a book in which magic and history and Florida and science all get scrunched up and then smoothed out again into a shape neither the reader nor Hank can anticipate. It’s a dark and fascinating ride. Henrietta Goodness — but for the love of little green apples call her Hank — is not your average heroine. But then, Dust Bath Revival is not your average book; sure, there are zombies but these aren’t your grandfather’s zombies and they aren’t necessarily the […]

Old Story, New Voices

Faintingviolet already did a great review of this glorious audio book, but I’ll try to give it justice as well. While abridged, this amazing full cast rendition of “The Hobbit” was a thoroughly enjoyable listen, and I highly recommend it. It’s complete with a musical score, sound effects, and Bilbo breaking the fourth wall to talk directly to the audience as if he’s recounting his tale right out of his “there and back again” memoir. I thought it was a neat artistic touch that Bilbo […]

“I am become a blade”

November 12, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

Spoiler warning! This is the third book in the Grisha trilogy and therefore NOT the place to start reading. This review will contain at least some minor spoilers for the previous books in the series, and who starts a trilogy with the third book anyway? Go read from the beginning, starting with Shadow and Bone. This review will be here when you’re caught up. Alina is shadow of her former self, trapped in tunnels underground, “protected” by the zealous Apparat (former high priest of Ravka) […]

A marked improvement on the first one

November 7, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Spoiler warning! This is the second book in a trilogy. I will be unable to review the book without possibly giving away spoilers for the first book in the series, Shadow and Bone. Which is obviously the one you should start with if you’re interested in this series. After the rather dramatic show-down with the Darkling at the end of the last book, Alina and Mal are on the run, trying to get as far away from Ravka as possible. Having to hide […]
