A book so sweet you’ll get cavities

December 13, 2016 by crystalclear 9 Comments

This is a very sweet book about acceptance and friendship.  Twig Fowler is a 12-year-old girl living in Sidwell, Massachusetts who doesn’t have any friends.  That is not by choice, but her mother insists that they not visit other people, because then a reciprocal visit would be expected, and no one is to come to their house. Because they have a secret.  The secret is Twig’s brother, James, who no one else knows exists.  He is a secret because he has been hit with the […]

Where there is milk, there is hope

December 13, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

While Mum is away on business, it’s up to Dad to make sure that his son and daughter have everything they need. Like milk for their cereal. Dad goes to the shops, but is gone for really rather a long time. When he returns, he explains to his children why he was gone for so long. It’s a story of adventure, danger, space aliens, time travel, vampires, angry South American gods, pirates and the amazing Professor Steg. The entire thing is beautifully illustrated by Chris […]

Inside the mind of a girl who names things

November 29, 2016 by tillie Leave a Comment

“She’d strayed from the true way of things. First you set yourself to rights. And then your house. And then your corner of the sky. And after that… Well, then she didn’t rightly know what happened next. But she hoped that after that the world would start to run itself a bit, like a gear-watch proper fit and kissed with oil. That was what she hoped would happen.”  Auri is a character introduced in the Kingkiller Chronicles. The Slow Regard of Silent Things is a […]

Plucky Heroine is Stupid

November 28, 2016 by Debcapsfan 1 Comment

Oh boy, where to start with The Glass Magician?  There’s a LOT of pining in this book. Ceony, our plucky heroine from The Paper Magician is back  learning from Emery Thane, three months after she rescued his heart from the evil Lira. She’s living with him, playing perfect little housewife trying to audition for that role permanently. And learning more about magic, I guess. A series of accidents leads Ceony to believe the Excisioners that took Lira’s frozen body are now after her. She turns out […]

Plucky Heroine is Plucky

November 28, 2016 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

Set in Victorian times, The Paper Magician adds magic based on different materials. When Ceony Twill, our plucky heroine, graduates from magic school, she is placed in an apprenticeship with a paper magician, and is not happy about it. Emery Thane is her teacher, and he shows her some interesting things to do with paper, as well as bringing stories to life (which seems a bit of a stretch) and Ceony settles into her new life quickly. She starts cooking and cleaning for Emery, and explains […]

Fantastic Historical Fiction

November 27, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Confession: I picked up this book not realizing it was volume 4 of a series. It still mostly made sense though, and I didn’t figure out it wasn’t book 1 until the end. It’s historical fiction, set in Victorian England, as Richard Francis Burton returns home from discovering the source of the Nile, but then it goes steampunk with time travel, spirits, vampires, etc. There’s a lot of real life historical people in this story, and thankfully there’s an appendix with the specifics at the […]
