Ringing in the new year with Brandon Sanderson short fiction Cosmere nerdery.

January 2, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

Good way to start off the year, with a mini-Brandon Sanderson marathon in book form. I spent a cozy day on my couch yesterday visiting the Cosmere, and it was lovely. This collection is more than just a collection of all of Sanderson’s short fiction set in the Cosmere (a shared universe world that a majority of Sanderson’s works are set it in). It’s also a mini-study of the Cosmere itself. Each system (i.e. the Roshar system, where the Stormlight Archive books are set, or […]

Two books for the price of no thanks

December 31, 2016 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

These two detective stories have made me realize I need to do a better job of picking mystery novels. I’ve been completely spoiled by Tana French who manages to make even the most basic characters interesting. One could even argue that her mystery plots aren’t all that complex or interesting and yet, I’m always enthralled. These two books squandered super interesting premises on garbage characters. Brilliance is a bookish take on the X-Men premise of humans being born with super abilities. These abilities are a […]

Three murderous sisters

December 31, 2016 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

3.5 stars. I can’t fully bump this up to 4 stars despite the interesting premise and great ending. There’s too much set up here to really consider this one as having a full narrative arc. However, it’s a very promising start to a series and I’d really recommend it if you’re looking for darker young adult fantasy. Three Dark Crowns takes place in a world where every generation has a set up triplets born to the queen. These triplets are claimed by different factions and […]
