All’s Fair in Love and Dragonfire

February 12, 2017 by Lane Leave a Comment

A fantasy novel inspired by Pride and Prejudice, the world of Heart Stone is full of monsters and a select class of people that kill the monsters while riding dragons. The fantasy elements did not really grab me, they were fine. Nothing too silly or cliche. So this takes us to the meat of it: the reworking of a beloved classic. Full disclosure Pride and Prejudice is one of my all time favorite books and I usually stay clear of rip-offs of Austen’s work (major […]

Not just for kids

Predator’s Gold is the second book in Philip Reeve’s Hungry City Chronicles, following Mortal Engines where we were first introduced to a world in which great traction cities stalk the land, preying on smaller or weaker cities. We catch up with Hester and Tom two years after the MEDUSA blast that destroyed Tom’s home city of London. Having taken the airship The Jenny Haniver as their own following the death of its badass previous owner, they’ve since eked out a life trading and travelling the […]

Don’t Think This Will be A Classic Like American Gods

February 8, 2017 by Classic 2 Comments

I think the biggest take away for me for this book is that not everything is American Gods. I thought that this book would be Gaiman’s take on Norse myths. And for the most part besides some humor and dialogue here and there, Gaiman plays this pretty straight from beginning to end. There are some passages here and there that moved me and some that made me smile. I am happy to have read this, but this is not going to be something that I […]

Half a King – Abercrombie with half the gore

February 7, 2017 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

Joe Abercrombie is the author of the First Law Trilogy.  A fairly brutal series that is more graphic than most standard fantasy, I recall wincing at times while reading the series.  While I thoroughly enjoyed the First Law books, I have never gotten around to the follow up books in the world setting.  In 2014 “Half a King” came out and was featured at my favorite bookstore as the speculative fiction pick of the month.  I seem to recall hearing that he had written this […]

The Paper Magician By Charlie N. Holmberg This is the first in a trilogy by Holmberg  following new Magician’s Apprentice Ceoney Twill as she begins her tenure in paper magic under the eccentric Magician Thane. She is not exactly keen on paper magic, she had wanted to be bonded to metal and a magician can only work with one material for their entire life. Normally, the student first in the class would get to pick their discipline, but Ceoney is told by the head of […]

Takin’ a Trip to Goofyland

February 6, 2017 by sabian30 1 Comment

Question Quest by Piers Anthony (1991) Xanth is a very magical realm and a complete series of fantasy books by cheeky Mr. Anthony.  In this ongoing story of Xanth, it begins with a simple girl on a simple quest.  She, like everyone else on Xanth, has a magical ability but that’s not the reason she’s come to ask an ancient wizard a Question.  She thinks she is an old maid at thirty and perhaps the proposal she turned down when she was younger could be […]
