Gryphons and Dragons and More, Oh My!

March 28, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Obviously, I am on a dragon kick this year, at least book-wise. Beyond that, dragons are always awesome. Just ask my dining room decor. After seeing yesknopemaybe’s review of Heartstone, I decided to check it out even though I am not always the biggest fan of Pride and Prejudice re-imaginings (the other dragon series I read this year also had a little Pride and Prejudice inspired short story!).  I think my ambivalence about P&P retellings is actually more because the original isn’t my favorite Austen […]

Better than the last three books in the series, but still not great, Bob!

Okay, so, two and a half star book, for me. I waffled between two and three stars for ages, but I’m going with two, I think, for a couple of reasons. One, what is the arc here? It’s sort of Moiraine becoming a real Aes Sedai, but there isn’t really any emotional development on her part. She is the same person before she passes the test for the shawl as she is after. I liked that person for the first half, then she did some […]

Nothing here is real, nothing here is right.

I’ve gotten to the point of CBR where I’ve got too many books banked, and I haven’t written any of the reviews for them, which means that by the time I get around to writing the review, I barely remember what the book is about. MUST BE MARCH. The Iron Fey is one of those YA series that I picked up because I ran across it on Goodreads, and it had goodish reviews, and I was bored, and MAGIC, but I’m not sure I’ll continue […]

As you might guess from some of my other posts, I am enough of an Internet Old that this was a re-read for me. I thought it held up beautifully.

I Will Be Made a New Creature, One Bright Day

March 18, 2018 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

A few months ago, someone posted in the CBR facebook group that Seraphina was on sale for Kindle. I went and bought it simply because it was cheap and the person said it was one of their favorite books. Whoever that person was, thank you, thank you, for introducing me to this fantastic book! Seraphina takes place in Goredd, a human country in a world where dragons and humans have had a peace treaty for many years. Dragons can take human form, but they have […]

If Tumblr had existed when this was published…

It would have been CRAZY. It is made for fanfic and fan art and OTPing. I am a little in love with this book that I was so fortunate to receive in the book exchange from JS. The War for the Oaks is one of the first urban fantasies published in 1987; it is set in Minneapolis in the 80s, centring on a musician named Eddi who finds herself getting out of both a bad relationship and a bad band, and falling into the middle […]
