Gotta be ruthless

April 3, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

First off, let’s give a huge round of applause to the cover designer. There have been some amazing covers in the last few years and this is one of the best. The book itself was also pretty enjoyable. It’s apparently in the works to be adapted as a movie by the same people who did Twilight and The Maze Runner. Not too shabby for a debut novel! Zélie Adebola is a young diviner, what her world calls a magi without power. Her world lost magic […]

The baddest bitch of them all

I didn’t love the final book in the Call of Crows series quite as much as I liked the first two. That kind of surprised me because Erin Amsel, who this book focuses on, is a favorite character in the other installments. I still liked her and thought the book was worth reading, it just didn’t have the same pull on me. Perhaps that’s because this book deviates from the first books and I found their sojourn through the various other worlds somewhat uninteresting. There […]

I wanted to like it …

April 3, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I didn’t read this one immediately after downloading it, so when the novel didn’t initially click for me, I blamed myself for forgetting that the main character was 12.  I had been thinking of it as a YA novel, but with the ages being around 12, it isn’t quite YA, which of course leads to slightly misaligned expectations.  “Oh,” I thought, “when they meant it’s like Harry Potter, they didn’t just mean magic, they meant age-wise, too.” However, when the novel continued to not quite […]

Books, cults, and rage

April 3, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

I enjoyed the first book in this series enough to immediately get the second book. Luckily my library had a copy. Libraries ftw! I’m happy to say that I enjoyed The Undoing even more than The Unleashing. The plot was just a bit tighter and the ending, while still pretty open, felt like it had more emotional closure. This book centers on Jace Berisha. She’s been a Crow for a few years, ever since her husband successfully killed her. After an upbringing in a cult […]

Best case zombies

3.5 stars. This book was a complete surprise and a total delight. Gobbled it up in one day because it was basically literary candy. Like, really well made gourmet level candy. I think it was recommended on a Book Riot podcast a while back and I thought, ooh, that sounds interesting. It was perfect timing for it to come up in my library holds for the weekend. Kera Watson is a tough lady. She served in Afghanistan in the Marines and now being back in […]

Hey, guess what this was super good.

I kind of don’t even know where to begin with this review. I’ve started half a dozen paragraphs while sitting here, and then deleted them all. Like, who wants to be the jerk who thinks one of their favorite authors took up another author’s life’s work and then did it better? But . . . UGH, I do think that! I do. I don’t think it’s any secret that I’ve had issues pretty much the whole way through the first eleven books of this series. […]
