“Crowns do queer things to the heads beneath them.”

February 4, 2014 by alwaysanswerb 1 Comment

Ah, A Song of Ice and Fire… as I mentioned in my review of A Game of Thrones for CBR5, I’m doing that wholly non-Patrician thing where I read the books after enjoying the visual media. HBO’s show is my favorite show currently in progress, and after a destructive internal war over whether or not I wanted to spoil myself, I decided I did. There is, in my mind, a huge difference between a spoiler that comes from some thoughtless dickhead on the internet, and a “spoiler” […]

The Violent Century by Lavie Tidhar

Superheroes Need Grammar and Punctuation, Too (A Robert CBR6 Review)

February 2, 2014 by Robert 3 Comments

What happens when an amazing story is torn apart by the author in the name of style over substance? Lavie Tidhar self-sabotages his latest novel, The Violent Century, just like that. Essentially, Tidhar is exploring an alternate reality where an unnamed catastrophic event caused hundreds of people around the world to transform into superhumans. Fogg and Oblivion, two British agents mostly used for information gathering rather than combat, control fog and dissipate matter, respectively. They are reporting their exploits in every major interntational war from […]

Jelinas Reviews Cannonball #2: The Love Song of Brian J. Prisco

January 28, 2014 by Jelinas 1 Comment

A good coming-of-age novel is interesting in that, even if the main character’s experience is vastly different from the reader’s, the reader still feels the nostalgia.

The Return of the Dunk, The Revenge of the Egg

January 25, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

NOTE: As with the first two in the series, I read The Mystery Knight as part of an anthology. In this case, it was Warriors, edited by George R.R. Martin himself along with some dude named Gardner Dozois, who I’ve never heard of before. Unlike with the other two anthologies, Warriors for the most part consists of original fiction by authors that is not tied in to their previous works. This means little fear of spoilers, so I’m going to read it and do a […]

A girl is called to save a snow-covered magical kingdom populated by animals – no, it’s not Narnia, why do you ask?

January 24, 2014 by Malin 1 Comment

Eleven-year-old Lindelin “Lin” Rosenquist is mourning the death of her pet vole, Rufus, and miserable in her new home away from her best friend and childhood haunts. One dark evening, she receives a mysterious package labelled “Twistrose” with a rose-shaped key inside. She discovers that the key unlocks a strange portal in the cellar under the house, and the portal leads to the magical kingdom of Sylver, entirely populated by animals with some kind of special bond to children on Earth. The petlings are deceased […]
