Ray, If Someone Asks Are You a God, Say “YES!”

July 17, 2014 by elecamel Leave a Comment

With trade news regarding a TV series (or miniseries or whatever it’s been decided to be) of American Gods popping up, I decided it was time for me to reread Neil Gaiman’s book. Mostly because none of the discussed character names really rang any bells and if pressed, I couldn’t have really summed up the plot other than anthropomorphic gods trying to get by in America, a godless land. Eh, kind of close? My pea brain’s inability to hold onto plot details for more than […]

Like an old familiar nightmare you’d forgotten you used to have.

I think probably the best way to describe what it’s like to read the Abhorsen trilogy is to compare it to a snowball rolling down a very, very large hill. We are all familiar with this metaphor–it basically implies that the thing being compared metaphorically moves faster and becomes MORE on the way down, whether that thing is the plot or your emotions as a reader, or both. Abhorsen is like this, but also THE SNOWBALL IS ON FIRE. Sabriel introduced the world, the characters (most of them), […]

Because the Disreputable Dog, that’s why.

So there’s this girl, and she lives in a Glacier. Yes, a real glacier. It’s in a tall mountain at the very tip-top of her country, and she lives there with thousands of cousins, who are collectively called ‘The Clayr,’ most of whom are female and have the pale blonde hair and tanned skin that marks them as one of their own. They are entitled to this sobriquet because every single one of them can see the future. Every single one of them, except Lirael, that […]

Great young adult fantasy before young adult fantasy was cool.

July 13, 2014 by narfna 2 Comments

Before the internet, the way I found new books to read was very different, if more simple. I would go to the library (or, on the occasion I actually had spending money, the bookstore), pick every book up that looked even remotely interesting, and take it home. Then I would read it. I was in no way discerning about which books I would read. This method had its downsides, the biggest of which was that I frequently ended up reading books I didn’t care for […]

Yet another wonderful series I missed reading as a child.

July 8, 2014 by narfna 8 Comments

Because I listen to audiobooks when I’m in the car, I went for a drive yesterday evening just to finish this series. Time and gas well spent. Really enjoyed making my way through this series over the last month and a half. Some of the best children’s fantasy I’ve read. Wish I would’ve read it as an actual child. And with one notable exception (which I’m not sure would have actually changed for me all that much if I’d read it the old fashioned way […]

Writing Science Fiction #LikeAGirl

June 29, 2014 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

During the past few days, a couple of interesting stories crossed my screen and they are so perfectly related to my current review that they simply must be referenced. First came the #LikeAGirl campaign from Always, encouraging us to turn that pejorative expression into a compliment. Then came this story from NPR about women writers in science fiction: Women are Destroying Science Fiction and That’s OK — They Created It. As I have just finished Ursula K. Le Guin’s classic The Dispossessed, I must say […]
