A Circus I Really Wished Was Real

September 9, 2015 by Ale 9 Comments

Half Cannonball!!!!!! And I’ve reached my reading goal! This is my second read of this book and I think I loved it more than the first time. The Night Circus is centered around a magical challenge vetted between a magician’s daughter, Celia, and a mysterious ‘man in a grey suit’ and his protégé Marco. The two players are chosen against their will to compete in a game of skill until their masters decide who has bested the other. Their playing field is a circus, populated […]

Stranger in a strange land

September 7, 2015 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars This is the second book in the Remnant Chronicles, following directly on from The Kiss of Deception. It is impossible for me to review this without spoilers for the first book, hence, skip this if you’re not caught up. Princess Lia is a prisoner in Venda, surrounded by what she has been taught are violent and backward barbarians. Having accepted her feelings for Rafe, she may never have a proper chance to act on them, as they are both captives and the Komizar, […]

Not just Coyote

September 1, 2015 by sistercoyote Leave a Comment

So it turns out that I have downloaded/bought about eleventybillion titles for my Kindle and read less than half of them (I don’t feel too guilty about this, because books and also because a lot of them were freebies). Despite that lack of guilt, I’ve decided I need to go through and, well, make my way through all of them. At least in this case it wasn’t a total mistake.

I’m so disappointed that I’m disappointed by this book.

August 31, 2015 by narfna 2 Comments

This review has given me real trouble. I LOVED the first book, liked the second quite a bit, and trusted that Abercrombie would give me whatever I needed to love this one, too. In a weird way that I still don’t understand, this third book in his Shattered Sea trilogy has not managed to meet my expectations, even though I’m not sure I had expectations to meet, beyond that I wanted to love it. I’m sort of devastated that it didn’t work for me. While reading, […]

There is an actual sharknado in this book

August 31, 2015 by tillie 5 Comments

There is an actual sharknado in this book. I feel like that should somehow be review enough. I mean… Maria Dahvana Headley seems like a wonderful person and I feel truly awful for saying this, but Magonia is a terrible book, it is unbelievable, boringly crafted and the structure of the story is completely imbalanced. I hated it, I was bored out of my mind – but the cover’s really pretty, so I guess that’s something. It starts out fine. Aza is your run of […]

“Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.”

August 24, 2015 by Halbs 1 Comment

Until earlier this month, I never read The Hobbit or the Lord of the Rings series. Additionally, I have not seen all of the movies. There is a lot to love in Fellowship. Readers of The Hobbit will appreciate visiting Bilbo, Gandalf, Elrond, and the Shire again. (If you are like me, you will also continue to hate those meddlesome Sackville-Bagginses. What a greedy, hot mess they are!) The world that Tolkien created is so real and fun that spending time there feels like a […]
