This book was scrumptious, and I devoured it. I stayed up so late reading it I legit almost fell asleep at work the next day. So there’s this dragon who lives near an evil wood, and once every ten years, he chooses a girl from a local village to take into his castle. In return for protecting the people from the corruption of the Wood, they allow him to choose freely from their daughters. But this dragon doesn’t have claws or wings; he has magic. He’s […]
Foul-mouthed, action-packed, sexy and fun
4.5 stars (both volumes) Rat Queens, volume 1: Sass and Sorcery Rat Queens, volume 2: The Far Reaching Tentacles of N’rygoth Meet the fierce and fearsome ladies of the Rat Queens, although calling them ladies is probably to exaggerate. There’s Hannah the Elven Mage, whose parents are both necromancers; Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, who shaved her beard off and left her family because she wanted to brawl; Dee the Atheist Human Cleric, whose family are Cultists of the giant Squid God of N’Rygoth and […]
A book bursting with charm
I went into this book knowing very little about it except that there are four different parallel worlds that each have a London. Grey London is our London and called grey because it’s smoky, dirty, and lacks magic. Red London bursts with magic and everything is slightly rose-tinted. White London is coated in a mist of ash and the citizens are crazed by their hunger for power. Black London died long ago. Kell is from Red London and is one of two known people with […]
So good! Too bad the book ends in the middle of the action with zero resolution.
This book was actually pretty great, but I knocked off a star because it didn’t have a full plot. I really think that even books that are part of a series should have some form of resolution to them so what you just finished reading feels satisfying. The Fifth Season just felt like it stopped on a random chapter. Not cool. I would recommend people wait for the next book to come out before reading this one. The premise of The Fifth Season is great. […]
An addictive page-turner
Such a fun book! The story is told through two perspectives: Laia and Elias. Laia is a slave whose grandparents were just murdered in front of her and whose brother was just arrested for treason. Laia barely makes it out alive and only has the rebels to turn to for help. In return for helping her, she makes a deal to infiltrate the Empire’s greatest military academy as a servant for the most sadistic leader working there. Elias is unhappily the school’s best soldier-in-training and […]
Creepily Delicious
4.5 stars. I inhaled this slim David Mitchell novel in just a few hours yesterday. I was so pleased by Cloud Atlas earlier this year that I nearly jumped for joy when I heard he was putting out a haunted house story just in time for Halloween. I hardly ever dabble in the horror genre, but I’m glad I made an exception. While this book was definitely creepy, it wasn’t overly scary. It propelled me to keep reading and find out what happened next, but […]
