Fangirl Down, Eleanor & Park to Go (Eventually)

July 7, 2017 by Orleanas Leave a Comment

Fangirl (2013) is another of Rowell’s character-driven  YA novels that has been well-received by readers and well-reviewed by critics. As of this post, it has a slightly higher rating on Goodreads (4.12) than her very much revered Eleanor & Park (4.11), also published in 2013. Rainbow Rowell is an engaging writer, so for all I didn’t like about the book, Rowell is gifted in being able to create memorable characters and worlds that seem relatable and authentic. Still, I could not get beyond thinking that this […]

Rainbow Rowell is my spirit animal.

August 22, 2016 by ingres77 10 Comments

I am iridescent with joy. I am pregnant with wonder. Gestating within me is the belief that regardless of how much I love the book, if Rainbow Rowell is writing it, I will absolutely love the people she fills it with. When my egg hatches, I will be gifted with the certainty that Rainbow Rowell is my new favorite author. Part of my effervescence, no doubt, is due to the long string of unhappiness in which I’ve enshrouded myself. The Girl on the Train, Cujo, The […]

Look at where you are. Look at where you started. The fact that you’re alive is a miracle.

It seems silly to try to summarize this novel. For a couple of reasons. One, because it’s a story that’s based on a fictional character from another fictional novel (meaning it’s a story made up by a character in a made up story). Two, because everyone who is familiar with Rainbow Rowell, and particularly her novel, Fangirl, already knows all about this novel so trying to describe it feels totally unnecessary. Especially given how many words have already been spilled all over the internet about […]

Consider me a Fangirl fangirl

January 27, 2016 by Even Stevens 15 Comments

Cath wants to be a writer, but she doesn’t want to write just anything. You see, Cath is a Simon Snow (this fictional world’s version of Harry Potter) fan. She might even be the biggest Simon Snow fan there is. She spends most of her time writing fan fiction about Simon and his nemesis, Baz, and it’s the only thing she loves to do, but she can’t do it forever and she’s not sure she’s up to the task of writing anything else. With an […]

I’m not such a fan, girl

October 26, 2014 by popcultureboy 5 Comments

Last year, my Cannonball book was a crashing disappointment. A one star disaster that I HATED. I didn’t want to repeat the same problem this year. I wanted book 52 to be a treat, a rave review, a delight. A book I tore through in a day because I couldn’t put it down. After loving Eleanor & Park so hard, I bought Fangirl so this was the obvious logical choice to take centre stage as book 52 this year. An obvious shoo in for a gushing and effusive review. […]
