This isn’t it…

Fangirl, Vol. 1: The Manga by Sam Maggs

October 25, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Look, I love Rainbow Rowell, I love Fangirl, and I love comics. How, then, could Fangirl, the manga, not be a homerun for me? I think my gripes begin and end with the art style. I could rant about how this isn’t manga, seeing as manga literally means a Japanese comic book, but plenty of people have said their peace about that already. It’s in a “manga style,” I guess, so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt, even if it remains quite sus. No, what bothers […]

Rainbow Rowell does COVID (with a dash of love)

If the Fates Allow by Rainbow Rowell

January 23, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Somehow, despite Rainbow Rowell being my favorite author, I was unaware of this story’s existence. But, in scouring through all the Rainbow Rowell reviews on here, just out of curiosity, I noticed plenty of reviews for this, discovered it was about Reagan from Fangirl, and decided I had to join in on the fun. If the Fates Allow picks up with Reagan during COVID times. Turns out she’s like my fiancee if  she were far rougher around the edges. Seeing Reagan go to such great […]

Sometimes a short story is just enough, but sometimes it leaves you wanting. CBR13 Reviews 7-9

The Prince and the Troll by Rainbow Rowell

The Deal of a Lifetime by Fredrik Backman

If the Fates Allow by Rainbow Rowell

I have been a very bad reviewer in 2021. I have been an amazing reader, with a list longer than any year I can remember. But sitting down to review has not been easy for me. I thought maybe I would try writing “bundles” of reviews, putting similar items together and knocking a few paragraphs out. Lets see how that goes. In order of least liked, to most: The Prince and the Troll. Blurb: It’s fate when a man accidentally drops his phone off the […]

“Honey, I’ve watched a lot of 90210. The parents weren’t even on the show once Brandon and Brenda went to college. This is your time – you’re supposed to going to frat parties and getting back together with Dylan.”

Fangirl, Volume 1 by Rainbow Rowell, Sam Maggs, Gabi Nam

Well, this was cute. Maybe it wasn’t as robust as I had hoped, but my god, it was cute. I had heard a few weeks ago that Rainbow Rowell had agreed to release a Manga version of Fangirl…and without any further details, I preordered right away. I didn’t realize it was just “Part 1” and that it would end right when I didn’t want it to. I have no idea how much longer I am going to have to wait to see Levi take Cath […]

Cozy re-read.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

February 20, 2019 by narfna 2 Comments

Quick review for a re-read. I still love this book. It’s still a great character study of Cath, who has anxiety and abandonment issues, and has huddled in on herself like a turtle, afraid to put out feelers to the outside world. She uses reading and writing fanfiction as an outlet for her creativity, and a way to forget herself for a while, but she wants to be a professional writer, and that means a type of writing she isn’t comfortable with yet, a type […]

Good ole Nebraska U

May 8, 2018 by Dusty Highway 11 Comments

This book took me completely by surprise. I mean, of course I knew I’d like it, since Rainbow Rowell is a favorite around these parts, but I had no idea it would hit so close to home. I added Fangirl to my wishlist along with a whole mess of other books at the beginning of my push to even out the male-female author ratio in my library. I knew the basic premise of the book but nothing about the author besides her gender, so when […]
