Allergic to Christmas

December 19, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I feel for Maple in Maple & Willow’s Christmas Tree, as I, too, am allergic to real Christmas trees. Though I never thought (but do like the idea) I was “allergic to Christmas” though. This statement made by little sister, Willow, is a very typical kid thing to say. In fact, this whole book (and the series overall) is a very typical little kid thing. However, the fact Willow feels sorry for hurting her sister’s feelings is more of an adult take and a typical […]

More than the monsters get undressed

December 14, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

“Forgive my bluntness, but… Goddamn, Sam Sax can write some poems. Ross Gay” And he can. I am not sure though if I like them or not. There are some fabulous images. He just explores what it was/is to be him. Gay, Jewish, male, a person and so much more. And he does it wonderfully, creatively, not easily through his poems. His experiences. His knowledge. Sax is not for the “I like flowers and pretty ponies” poetry crowd. He is for the “this poem will […]

#CBR10Bingo: Cannonballer Recommends (this was a CBR Book Exchange gift from Yesknopemaybe (my paperback copy), it has also been favourably reviewed by MathildeHoeg, ingres77, dAvid, badkittyuno, belphebe, emmalita, narfna and faintingviolet, among others) Rosemary Harper is trying to escape her old life and doesn’t want anyone tracking her down. She pays a lot of money to get a new identity and gets a job on a run-down and patched up spaceship, where no one from her old life would ever think to look for her. Aboard […]

Ethan Long Presents Fangsgiving is another Ethan Long gem with our favorite monsters. This time the monsters of the Fright Club are having Thanking at Vlad’s placed. However, when Vlad’s family comes to join them, he is excited to see them, but boy do things get out of hand! However, the Fright Club and Vlad’s family learn what it means to be a family, about cooperation, having a good time and leaving Spike, the dog, outside during dinner time.   Add this to your Fright […]

Well, thanks a lot for leaving me with further emotional scars for a whole year, Brian!

4.5 stars This is volume 9, it is NOT the place to start the series. Do, however, get to your nearest retailer of comics/graphic novels and buy volume 1, it’s pretty much the best thing out there right now. You won’t regret it. Normally, the volumes of Saga tend to vary between heavy and emotionally wrenching storylines, followed by something a bit more funny, light-hearted and uplifting. Vol 7 ended on a very sad note, and Vol 8 was an exploration of grief and loss and not […]

Do you celebrate with your family? Well so does this family!

October 17, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If you are a fan of the All-Of-A-Kind Family series, this might be a book to add to your collection. It is a picture book with slightly more text than usual, but in the vein of the original tales as Emily Jenkins has tried to keep to the spirit of a beloved series. And Paul O. Zelinsky also has tried to keep the feel of the original illustrations while putting his own spin on them. In an afterwards he mentions his influences and reasoning […]
