When a Disaster turns out to be the best day of your life

Harold Snipperpot's Best Disaster Ever  by Beatrice Alemagna

July 3, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I will say, I was not a big fan of Beatrice Alemagna’s, On a Magical Do-Nothing Day. Yet, it was a huge hit with most of my coworkers in both our stores. Therefore, I am assuming Harold Snipperpot’s Best Disaster Ever will be for anyone a fan of this author and illustrator. While the story could be a hit or miss for the reader (and a miss for me) this book has an interesting point. While the theme was strong, the execution of the wild rumpus […]

When I think of this question, I always have my moms smarty pants answer in my head…

Where Are You From? by Yamile Saied Mendez

June 27, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

As much as I enjoy good poetic prose, there was something missing for me in Where Are You From?  I did not see the buildup to this question as the reviews and title suggested. Yet, it is over all a good story about a granddaughter and her grandfather. Their relationship played a larger part for me then the fact that because the girl is “different” people assume that she is “not from here” and therefore, of course they ask, “Where are you from, really?”  That […]

Life might not be basketball, but basketball can be Life

The Crossover by Kwame Alexander

June 24, 2019 by BlackRaven 3 Comments

My goal this year was to read books I tend not to read. I was doing well but quickly fell back into my comfort zones. One being YA graphic novels. As far as I know, I have not read any Kwame Alexander novels. I might have read a short story or two, but that is it. Therefore, I have wanted to add him to my To Be Read List and figured a graphic novel was a good way. What it turned out to be was […]

Daisy, Dad and a Motorcycle

My Papi Has a Motorcycle by Isabel Quintero’

June 21, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My Papi Has a Motorcycle is a good father and daughter story that is based on Isabel Quintero’s own experiences as a child with her father and driving around the city they called home. Quintero brings together the past (the races they had on what is now the main street), present (the dog chasing them, and their favorite shaved ice place closed) and future (a cart that sells shaved ice). The sense of family and community is loudly presented. It is also boldly presented with […]

I am a Wolf, not a dog, even though I look like a dog, I am a WOLF!

I Am a Wolf by Kelly Leigh Miller

June 21, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am a cat person. Well, actually more of a pet rock person, but that’s another story. It is not that I do not like dogs, I just know that they are a lot of work, need a lot of love and time. And I know I cannot give that to any pet. However, I know that, like in I Am a Wolf if I did decide to get a pet, there would be the perfect one for me. Kelly Leigh Miller has made a […]

To the one who provided womb and board all those months

My Two Moms and Me by Michael Joosten

Mom and Me, Me and Mom by Miguel Tanco

April 25, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Mother’s Day is around the corner. The following two books are a fun combination as gifts for the parent/mom but also something that can be read to the child with any parent. One is modern in its approach, while the other has a more stereotypical format. Both, however, are interesting additions to the world of “Mom Books” in the children’s section of your local store. One child’s voice is telling the story of them and their moms in My Two Moms and Me. However, you […]
