I Was the Wrong Audience for this Book

January 11, 2018 by Ale 4 Comments

One of my colleagues asked me to read this book along with him to help him prepare a presentation for his religions and sociology course, and I wanted to like it, for his sake and my own, but I was hands-down the absolute worst audience for this book. This is a volume for someone who’s coming in with no prior knowledge, or knows a little bit about a lot of different religions. I unfortunately know an iceberg’s worth of information on my own religion, and […]

One last book for the year!

December 31, 2017 by bonnie Leave a Comment

I was able to squeeze one last review in before the year is up. Even better, it’s a book that’s been languishing on my TBR list. Hooray! I have some goals for 2018, and it’s nice to really trim the to-read pile significantly. This is an author well familiar to me, though I’ve never finished this book until now. C.S. Lewis is perhaps best known for his Narnia fantasy books, but he’s also an academic and Christian apologist. Mere Christianity is a defense of Christianity in post-war, […]

A book to make me feel less guilty about reading books….

January 6, 2017 by kella 16 Comments

Ok people.  Imma start with a confession/disclaimer.  Let’s get ‘er out of the way in week one.  I’m new here.  And a Christian.  Please don’t kick me out.   My personal belief system can be summed up as: “You can love Jesus and not be a douche about it”.  I hate to use the word  “Christian” because of the horrible things that have been done/said/written under that label. I like to distance myself from the religious wackos as much as the next person. That being […]

Ending a religious series on a so-so note.

August 26, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

I’ve finally finished reading The Conflict of the Ages series. I’m ready to get back to reading the Bible itself for my evening devotion. While I am glad to have read a keystone series from our most prolific founding member in the Adventist faith, I’ve discovered that there’s nothing like the original source of faith itself to cement your faith. The Great Controversy is an odd mishmash of Reformation History, the Millerite movement and subsequent founding of the Adventist Church, and exegesis of the Book […]

Stories Helped Make Me Who I Am

July 27, 2016 by Emmalita 3 Comments

3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 I love Faith. LOOK AT HER!!!!! She is a legitimately fat woman. She looks like a real fat woman and not just an extra curvy woman. She flies and fights crime. As a fat woman myself, I love this. I know a lot of fat women who have the athleticism and grace to fly, if only gravity would let them. And do you know how often her weight is alluded to? Never. No one tells her she can’t superhero […]

You are entering the Red Zone. Proceed at own risk. When in doubt, run.

I consider myself very lucky that I discovered Justin Cronin’s “The Passage” series only last summer, so the wait for City of Mirrors was much less painful and dramatic than it would have been if I’d been reading in real time: The Passage was published in 2010 and The Twelve in 2012. City of Mirrors came out four weeks ago. That’s not on a George R. R. Martin level, but still could have been a brutal wait for me. Whew! I love this series. I […]
