Cover of T. Kingfisher’s Hemlock & Silver

“Potatoes,” he said at last, “do not make gods.”

Hemlock & Silver by T. Kingfisher

August 14, 2025 by Emmalita 5 Comments

Hemlock & Silver is a solid T. Kingfisher read. It’s a Snow White inspired fairytale, told from an unexpected point of view. There is a mystery to be solved, a helping of body horror, and a little bit of romance. The setting is very different from the world of the Temple of the White Rat, and yet it feels comfortably familiar. You don’t know where you are, but you can trust the storyteller to take you somewhere interesting (complimentary). Anja is called a healer, but […]

The Hunt meets Rumpelstiltskin

Gilded by Marissa Meyer

Cursed by Marissa Meyer

May 11, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I have been struggling lately with books – just feel like I keep starting novels that aren’t quite hitting the spot. They aren’t bad or anything (I think) but they aren’t pulling me in or the tone is slightly off. I have had this one on my Kindle for a few months now and wasn’t entirely sure what to expect but it worked out for me. Marissa Meyer has been a bit hit or miss for me – I mostly enjoyed The Lunar Chronicles (especially […]

More Women Getting Justice

Silenced by Ann Claycomb

June 19, 2023 by Owlizabeth 1 Comment

I am struggling to write this review. This book was good and I enjoyed it and I absolutely recommend it. Let’s just put that upfront. A solid almost four-star read. Like, a 3.85. Really. So why do I want to complain about it? I guess it’s because it is another entry in my new favorite subgenre – post-#metoo feminist fiction with a magical realism or fairy tale bent – but it just isn’t quite as excellent as other books I’ve read recently. It mostly suffers […]

Lyrical prose, historical setting, and a fairytale feel mesh well together

A Rush of Wings by Laura E. Weymouth

March 22, 2022 by Aquillia Leave a Comment

A Rush of Wings is YA fantasy author Laura E. Weymouth’s most recent book (with a gorgeous cover in a different style than her other equally gorgeous covers). In many ways it resembles her second book, A Treason of Thorns in its historical setting (this time the Scottish highlands) more than her first, The Light Between Worlds, but there is some shared DNA with that one too, especially in its protagonist. While The Light Between Worlds offered a sort of justice for the Narnia character Susan Pevensie, […]

I Loved This Book

A Thorn in the Saddle by Rebekah Weatherspoon

October 11, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I loved this book so much. I have enjoyed Rebekah Weatherspoon’s Cowboy’s of California series. I wasn’t at all sure how she was going to top the amazing middle book, If the Boot Fits, but she did. A Thorn in the Saddle is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It has a man with a temper, a daughter defending her father, and a couple who face their fears to be brave for one another. Jesse has been the brother hanging out in his younger brothers’ […]

Bogged Down with Hairshirts

The Charmed Wife by Olga Grushin

July 15, 2021 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

CBR Square: Cityscape. Shoutout to the folks who put together the CBR Bingo, because I was wondering where to fit this book, then I looked at the paperback cover and realized it has a cityscape in a shoe outline. I liked this book more than the last Cannonball Reviewer, but it did drag in several placed for me. The Charmed Wife is a retelling of Cinderella, where she’s been married to her Prince for 13.5 years and he’s a cheating horndog. This is hammered home […]
