a mermaid’s tail made of donkey skin (a dual cbr13bingo and #cannonbookclub adventure!)

Deerskin by Robin McKinley

Sea Witch by Sarah Henning

September 9, 2021 by andtheIToldYouSos 2 Comments

well, not exactly. What we have here are two retellings of classic fairy tales: Charles Perrault’s deeply upsetting Donkeyskin (recently reviewed by our very own BlackRaven) and Hans Christian Andersen’s  also unsettling The Little Mermaid. Both of these entries are picks for our upcoming #cannonbookclub event- and I’ll be discussing Deerskin further during our Zoom- but in the meantime, let these two help you choose your pick(s)! Also- both of these tales of girls on the cusp of womanhood have been reclaimed and retold by women. […]

My Little Pony meets Gulliver’s Travels

Across the Green Grass Fields by Seanan McGuire

March 26, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I think that Across the Green Grass Fields, the sixth Wayward Children novella, might be the first fully stand-alone story set in the same world as the previous six. This had so much potential and the world that Regan wanders into is fascinating. Problem is that there is so little plot, not much world or character development, and the whole thing feels kind of rushed. The basic premise is still there; not long after a major personal trauma the protagonist finds a door to a […]

Third Time is a Charm

A Vow So Bold and Deadly by Brigid Kemmerer

March 25, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I suppose this is why I hesitate to give up on books (or series) even when I find them lacking. I felt that way about the Temeraire books at some point (like most people) but in finishing them enjoyed every little snippet of Temeraire and Iskierka I found. I wrote at the end of the previous book: I guess now I’m invested, I’ll read the third book as well, but I’m not like super INTO this book series Happy to say that I will eat […]

Tale As Old As Time? Gimme Gimme

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

February 2, 2021 by wicherwill 6 Comments

This is a 3.5 star book, rounded up because I definitely enjoyed it quite a bit. Recommended here by Siskel101, I was always going to be in the mood for a Beauty and the Beast retelling. Belle remains my jam, Disney weirdness aside (did you know she’s apparently 17? What would have been lost in the storytelling if she had been 27? Nothing, that’s right. Kids don’t understand the difference between 17 and 27, they’re both Old). This was definitely not as good as Robin McKinley‘s […]

So that what happens to game designers when they retire?

Billy and the Beast by Eli Easton

January 12, 2021 by Professor FluffyKitten Leave a Comment

Eli Easton is the pen name of Jane Jensen a game designer and writer who helmed one of the more successful Sierra adventure game series, Gabriel Knight. She is also somewhat blamed for the death of adventure games due to a specific puzzle in Gabriel Knight 3 and the fact that it was the last adventure game released by Sierra. This is a shame mostly due to Jane Jensen being A. one of the only female game designers who directed her own series of games […]
