Jack Be Rapey, Jack Be Quick

September 27, 2015 by Quorren 1 Comment

Somewhere, in one of the volumes of Fables before this one, Jack of the Tales split and got his own series.  I’m not exactly sure where that happened as Jack is not a character I particularly cared about and now that he’s back (for a limited time), I’m even more inclined to wish he would be set on fire. Jack’s past gets revealed quickly and with not much detail, which is probably means you should’ve been reading his series concurrently with the main Fables tales. […]

The Fables series finale begins

June 11, 2015 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

After finishing Camelot, I started wondering about the seeds Willingham was planting that point toward very bad things happening to Fabletown and the Farm where our various heroes and anti-heroes make their homes. The series has had a couple of board-clearing events in the past but this one felt different. Turns out I was right. Last year, Willingham announced he was ending both Fables and the spinoff, Fairest, this summer. Specifically the last issue will come out July 22, 2015 and be 150 pages long. […]

Fairy Tales Are Just That

April 7, 2015 by Melina 1 Comment

I went into Fables with no real expectations (lies) but I guess framed against the two things that I have seen on TV– The Charmings (which Wikipedia tells me aired from 1987-88 but I must’ve only watched one show or two) and Once Upon a Time–no offense to anyone if either or both of these things are your “thing” but because of this, I was more wary than excited to read it.  This made little sense because I’ve only seen good reviews and I’m always […]

Debut Harry Hole book is not bad, but contributes little to the Hole story at this late date

January 9, 2015 by Valyruh 1 Comment

This is apparently the debut novel of Nesbo’s Harry Hole series, released in English only recently and after a whole raft of later Harry Hole mysteries were already long in the public domain in their English translation. While it is gratifying to learn that (1) Hole was once capable of a romantic relationship and (2) that Hole was once capable of having a whole conversation with someone, this novel doesn’t reveal a whole lot more about this morose if brilliant drunk of a detective except […]

So Glad You Could Stay Forever

January 5, 2015 by Fredo Leave a Comment

“Once we were a thousand separate kingdoms, spread over a hundred magic worlds. We were kings and cobblers. Wizards and woodcarvers. We had our sinners, our saints, and our blatant social climbers. And from the grandest lord to the lowliest peasant girl, we were, for the most part, strangers one to another.” “It took an invasion to unite us.” Reimagining fairy tales is not necessarily a new endeavor.  They have ranged from the cute and fun “Tangled” to the popular TV series “Once Upon A […]

I did it, I really really did it!

December 31, 2014 by Robyn Robotron 6 Comments

It’s a Fables encyclopedia. But, more importantly, I made it!!  I almost didn’t think I was going to.  This has been wonderful fun.  I’m definitely signing up for next year, except I’m only committing to a half Cannonball.  With a new baby on the way, and how close I came to the wire on this one, I don’t think I can make it to 52 next year.  Thanks to everyone for the interesting reviews and to MsWas for keeping this ship afloat.  I hope everyone […]
